My New (Custom) Scuttle!

Hi everybody,

After viewing the wonderful work done by Gaye Markley from other members on this site, I wrote to enquire about commissioning a custom scuttle. I really like the design of a true double-layered scuttle (removable inner bowl).

Much to my delight, I was able to order one for myself! I was even able to pick the colours and general design. It measures 5.5” wide and 2.5” tall. (You can fit a tub of Taylor’s in the inner bowl and have a little room to spare.)

It works wonderfully! The warm lather is such a joy to apply, and it is so sturdy and well crafted that I cannot speak highly enough about it.

A webpage about Gaye's work can be found here: http://my.att.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&subpageid=318444&ck=

In my last correspondence, Gaye informed me that plans for a pottery studio/business are under way!

Here are some pictures of my new addition:

All that lizard is missing is a newspaper:lol:

Are you trying some special additives to enhance lathering?

Hot lather really is awesome.

Is gecko spit your secret to creating mounts of warm lather?
i see. i see. Now where to acquire a gecko

Crested geckos are the most sweet and docile creatures I have ever had the pleasure of raising.

My ex was very much into tokay geckos as well - polar opposite to the crested - mean SOB's they were but she loved them just the same!

Nice scuttle by the way :w00t:

Geckos are wonderful creatures indeed!! As a pest control in their habitat they rule, of course, but lately some problems have arised: being abandoned on the wildlife they colonized habitats and are a problem.

That said the pet industry in some parts of the world is doing nasty things to habitats:burmese pythons can be found in the Glades, varanusreptile branches in some islands, cane toads (bufo marinus) in Australia (that one by a gov. decision to control other pests), grey squirrel in Europe, just to name a few, are destroying habitats and local species.

Once the mediterranean chamaleon was widespread in southern Europe, from Greece to Portugal.Today just some spots still exists being colonized and destroyed by abandoned geckos and green iguanas on nature. :bored:

i like the "big butt" or extra wide base of this scuttle (have not seen that before) and the way the blue glaze offsets the white.

i'd like to get one myself. hopefully you didnt have to break the bank?

congrats - great looking scuttle - and the gecko isn't bad lookin either - just curious though what is the benefit of the removable bowl ?

Is this the same Gaye Markley of Singing Hands Pottery? I would love to commission my own scuttle.

The very same. A true pleasure to deal with, and very talented - as you can see!

Gaye was kind enough to offer a selection of colour options, and let me pick! So thanks. I like the colours too, they turned out great and remind me of old-fashioned stoneware.

The cost was quite reasonable, and competitively priced compared to many of the single-piece mass-produced scuttles you can find online. However, being a custom hand-made item I would imagine that individual prices may vary.

I can hold the inner bowl comfortably in my palm while working a lather, if I want to take it slow and really enjoy it. IE: if I’m listening to music while shaving. I can also give the whole scuttle a quick drying, while the one-piece models might not be so forgiving IMO.

Also, the inner bowl is surrounded by hot water on the sides and bottom. Most of the single-piece scuttles you find online are attached at the bottom, which means that the hot water only surrounds the sides. I think Gaye’s design allows more heat transfer and keeps the inner bowl hotter.

I also really like the sturdiness of the clay. It is quite strong and even, almost hard to believe it was shaped by hand. She is a true artist.

Great points. The Crested Gecko was thought to be extinct until 1994, and today they only exist in a small part of the world; a chain of islands off the coast of Australia called New Calidonia. Due to the importation of Red Fire Ants to their native habitat they are now close to being an endangered species. (The ants swarm/eat them.)

It is believed that there are nearly more Crested Geckos in captivity than the wild. Fortunately they make such wonderful pets that it may save them from vanishing forever.
