My "Little Maggie" Razor

Thanks to some great trades, a new DE razor is welcomed into my den. I call it the "Little Maggie". It is a Maggard Razors M4 Handle paired with a RazoRock Little Bastone Open Comb Head.

Starting with the handle. This is an M4 handle from Maggard Razors in MI. This particular handle was actually a Scratch n Dent special, which I believe they have sold out of but was a steal at $7.50. (I traded for it, as I said) There is an area near the bottom of the handle in the lined section that has obviously been dinged, but its not an issue at all and the rest of the handle looks great! Some Specs:

Length: 4"
Weight: 3oz.
Construction: Chrome over Brass

First impressions are, this handle is long and heavy. It feels very solid, similar in feel to a machined Stainless Steel handle. There's plenty of grip, provided by the different sections and the lined pattern. At this length, I almost felt like I needed a little kid fist type grip at first. But it becomes very easy to grip in a comfortable way during a shave. Another item of note, this handle has a natural resonance. What I mean is, it will ring a little bit similar to a tuning fork when lightly bumped or handled, and during shaving! If I got a good stroke where it really cut hair, I could hear it. Its very subtle, so don't think you'll be tuning up to an A when shaving. As for threading, so far it has fit perfectly on a Muhle R41 head as well as the RR Little Bastone. The threaded post of the RR head is longer than many, and this Maggard handle can accomodate that with no issues. In conclusion, its a great DE razor handle if you like long and heavy, and it looks very sharp!

The RazoRock Little Bastone Open Comb Head is a traditional style OC head. A simple curved baseplate and top plate. The finish is chrome over zinc alloy, and this head is flawlessly shiny. Blade fit and tightening down have no issues with alignment. As stated above, it tightens down perfectly to the M4 handle, though the post is longer than many other heads and may not work on other handles. For reference, it does also tighten down using a vintage ball end handle, though it didn't feel like a perfect match. How does it shave? Well, that comes tomorrow so you'll just have to tune back in to find out! However, I can guess from prior experience and overall look of this razor head that it will perform quite similar to most OC heads of this design; Fairly aggressive and close

There you have it. Thought you guys would enjoy this! Its a great looking combo and both components are a bargain.
Thanks!

I do like that handle. I have mine on a replated new deluxe, and it is a nice match as well. And for $7.50 it was a steal. :001_tt1:

"So how does it shave?" Asked no one....

Well, I'll tell ya! It was an eye opening experience and a great shave!

The shave gear:
Razor: RazoRock Little Bastone Open Comb Head on Maggard M4 Handle
Blade: Ladas(3)
Brush: TSN LE Semogue
Soap: RazoRock Brain Freeze Hard Soap
AS: Captains Choice Cat o' Nine
PreShave: RazoRock Preshave soap

First outing with my "Little Maggie" combo razor. I can sum this up in one simple statement: As close and aggressive as my '11 R41. Yep, it really was! It took the same amount of passes, seemed to take off the same amount of hair per pass and feels as close after. Theres a bonus though over the R41. While this razor is much heavier, this head feels less aggressive, more forgiving and allows for quicker and nimbler strokes. I honestly was very surprised, and it kind of changes the way I'm thinking about the R41. Now, one small thing though, is after the fact I can tell I got a bit of irritation all around because the CC Cat O Nine did burn quite a bit, when it usually doesn't that much. But, for the first use I totally accept that as an easy work itself out with more shaves thing.

Guys, if you're into aggressive razors, this is one that is seriously worth a look!

Well, she's a cute ol' gal. The first thing to come to mind when I saw the title of your post was an old bluegrass tune with the same title, "Little Maggie". I suppose we could revise the lyrics:
"Yonder stands Little Maggie
With a boar brush in her hand
She's whuppin' up a lather
And shavin' another man."
Have fun with Little Maggie but don't let her break your heart.

That was great! Thank you oldbluelight!
