What's new

My horse hair brushes

Both these brushes have been restored with horse hair bristles by me

They work better than boar at gathering lather and have the muscle in their feel

They certainly retain water as good as a badger

They DO NOT shed.

They are bouncy and firm

They are great.

Try them

Where did you manage to source some horse hair knots stubble? I'm sure others would be interested to know.

And those are fine looking brushes you restored! They almost have a pure badger look to them! I agree that the horse hair brushes are worth a try. :thumbup1:

Stop posting this kind of stuff!!!
Its bad for my wallet! :crying:

Really nice looking, i might buy one in the very distant future, my wallet has to recover first

great job stubblefree...nice looking hair and handles,,,,I'm not trying to be a wise ***,but did you obtain the horsehair from your own horses or did you buy the knots? I ask because it should not be all that complicated to steam sterilize and mould your own knot with hair you trimmed from a horse...of course an easier way would be to cannibalize a couple of vie-long pro barber brushes,I know I would to save great looking handles like these

Very nice. My only experience with horsehair is vintage knots which are VERY prickly and hold absolutely no water whatsoever, but lather like the best boars out there. I'm currently using one to soften my beard every shave in the hopes it will break in, but in the end I may have to break down and try modern horse hair which is probably treated somehow to improve it I figure.

edit: I'm curious about the knots also, as they look WAAAAAY more like black badger than like any horse hair I've seen.

Nice work. Where did you get the knots?

I have a new horse hair brush from Long Vie. I think it's great. Tough to beat badger though.

Horses come in lots of colors. I have seen other horse hair brushes on Ebay with similar coloring.

I mostly meant the look of the hair itself. Whispy hairs curling around near edges. I've never seen horse hair do that. Or boar. Only badger.

I got them through a friend who sources it from somewhere in Thailand.

Hope I get some more soon. Then I can mount them on some really nice handles and give them to you guys at B&B.

The Ever Ready 500PBT (Black Handle) can be spared for a price.

Interested ?

It is easier said than done. These are virgin knots made to order from regular knot makers.

Who can question your authority on Brushes Ian.
You are right about the prickly feel and water retention issues.
But then on constant usage the tips tend to curl up, softens up and starts retaining water like a tanker.
I have been using the red/white handled brush for a while and it is by far the best brush I have used and take priority of place among my other brushes.

Does not shed a single hair anymore.

I'm curious as well :001_smile It seems to be dyed.

These are not dyed or bleached or chemical treated. They are as they came out of the horses......only cleaned, sterilized and sorted well.

Hi Burak......any developemnts on the brushes from turkey? Your Godrej is waiting to be shipped.

Nice work. Where did you get the knots?

Keep it in use and see the difference. It should beat a badger hands down one day...lathering and water retention wise.

You are right Ian....this one takes the cake for performance as well.

I'm good for now with a horse hair brush stubble but thanks for asking! I still need to give it proper use. All my brushes infact. SBAD says differently though and is regularly calling for new brushes. :001_rolle
