My flea market find...help I'd?

? The same find as bryan1980?

Will post pic in next post...

I probably paid too much for this, but I am on vacation, and wentto this flea market and asked all the vendors, something like 30 or 40... If they had any vintage gilletes...only one guy, everyone else directed me to him, he had one....it was marked $50, I asked if he'd take $25, he said $30....

I probably paid a bit too much, but a. I am on vacation, b. I didn't want to come home from the flea market empty handed, c. I really don't know what these are worth, I started to clean it, but will need to get at it with a tothbush when I get home.

It came with a partial case, seems as if the top is missing, and there is a small crack in the side of the case.

Any information on the razor and it's true value would be nice, I plan to use this, not resell...at least not now, it's my first collectible, and there are lots of antique shops to stop in to before vacation is done.

One guy did have a tempting find, but I passed, he had two boxes with like 30 little boxes of razor blades, one brand was "doctor" I can't remember the other, but he wanted $15 for both...I am not too into collecting these things yet so I passed them up...

What do you know about doctor brand razor blades??

It's a Gillette Super Adjustable in a Gillette Fatboy case. The case is missing it's see thru cover.

Gillette made three widely available Adjustable razors: The Fatboy, The Slim, and The Super Adjustable. The Super Adjustable was produced last, but is every bit as good as the other two.

$30 is a fair price for a good condition Super Adjustable.

Looks like you've got a 70's Super Adjustable and at 30 you might have slightly overpaid.
I wouldn't sweat the case as it was mismatched to the razor as that's a Fat Boy case anyway.
There should be a letter and number on the underside of the head that can date the razor.

They are likely to be carbon steel blades. They typically don't hold up well to the passage of time, and if you attempt to use them, they will provide for a horrific shave.

Vintage stainless steel blades on the other hand, tend to be some of the best ever made!!

I happen to think there are far more exciting things to spend your money on than vintage blades that have no value beyond a display piece.

Best I can tell there is a 0 and a 1 on the bottom, along with "Gillette made in us, reg pat of"

This looks like a first quarter 1969 super adjustable???

And you are right ...wrong case! It doesn't fit!

Is the case worth something to someone who owns a fat boy ? Even if it's missing the top? Could be convinced to trade, since it doesn't match...but maybe I'll be able to find one, there are still plenty of thrift and antique shops to stop in...

Glad I didn't pick up the blades....

There were two other non straight razors there yesterday, (the straights were in horrible shape)...there was a GEM single edge in a case, gold with a red case...and what looked like a handle to a early cartridge or single edge Gillette...it had a little adjuster on it...

I was only out for DE stuff so I didn't take those either...since this was my first "hunt", I had to set limits on myself...lol

Maybe. Cases have value when they're complete. Cracks are not uncommon and don't have a huge effect on value, but broken hinges or missing pieces (like your case) do hit the value pretty hard.

I would say for 30 bucks you picked up:
1. A piece of shaving history that you can use for the rest of your life;
2. A wonderful example of engineering;
3. A personal item you can pass on after many years to your heirs, which will leave them with memories of you;
4. A permanent item - non-disposable. Never outdated. Never obsolete. Always in style;
5. A really cool connection to the past;
6. An environmentally favorable alternative to countless plastic handles and outrageously priced cartridges.

Not bad for thirty bucks.

well that about sums it up to a "T"!

now, why did i buy that EJ DE89 last week? lol...

I actually was able to get this bad-boy cleaned up niecely here at my rental cottage by the bay (good supplies in the closet!) and gave it a spin tonight before we head off to dinner...I love it!, set it at "4" ('cause it was in the middle and seemed right!), nice smooth shave, minimal irritation, no weepers or nicks and even went ATG for the first time!

used a Gillette Platinum blade (seemed apropos) that i got as part of my sampler set...along with my BS Maca Root cream...

the case btw...

i seem to have the black part of this one...on the left, maybe??
