My First Concert in Years!

Just picked up two tickets to Steely Dan. I haven't gone to a concert in a long time, and I happened to see in the newspaper that Steely Dan will be playing nearby tomorrow night. I've been a fan for years, so I'm really excited!

Awesome concert! If these guys are playing somewhere nearby, I highly recommend getting tickets. Knowing their past dislike of touring, I was surprised when they looked like they had a ball playing on stage. Sound quality was excellent, as was their selection of songs. All in all, a great experience.

I saw them live at Jones Beach a few years back. For a band that relies so heavily on the studio, they put on a surprisingly great show. Becker and Fagen are themselves consummate musicians, and they know how to surround themselves with raw talent.

Glad you enjoyed the show.

I think, in general, they've kind of been poorly categorized as a studio band because they rarely did live shows. I've never been under the impression that they needed studio tricks to produce or clean up their tracks. Becker and Fagen = Steely Dan (IMO), and they've both got skills.

I don't understand the weirdness they had with Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson a year or two ago, but that's another story altogether.

I've gotten the same impression, Walter. I watched a VH1 show on them once and it appeared to me that they enjoyed the production part of music at least as much as actually playing the music.
Something else I forgot to mention was their choice of opening act for the concert. If I remember correctly, I think they were the Sam Yahil Trio. Three young men that did jazzy instrumentals. I'd never heard of them before, but they were very good, too.

Well I whole-heartedly agree that they're both quite skilled. Still they did do a lot of work in the studio and I have to wonder how well they would have reproduce their sound live back in the 70's as opposed to today.

And it's not like studio bands are bad live. Actually one of the best concerts I've been to was an Alan Parson Live Project concert.

Good point, Gollum83 (AKA- Wretched Wings Fan). I understand where you're coming from.

I think we're talking about different definitions of 'studio band'.

I guess my point is that I was always under the impression that the different incarnations of Steely Dan were 'studio' mostly because they were hostage to Fagen's inability to face a live crowd. I don't think they'd have had too much trouble with most of their music live in the seventies. Bands like Weather Report and other fusion artists were going live regularly back then with similar effects.

In this context, when I say studio band, I'm definitely talking about bands like The Monkees who, until they learned how to be musicians (possibly with the exception of Mike Nesmith) had to rely heavily on filters and in-studio sprucing to make their tracks up to snuff.

Anyway, doesn't matter one way or the other. The main thing is that they're still kicking and sounding good and Bamafan got a good show. Sweet.

And I see where your coming from, and you do make an excellent point...

...I'll agree The Monkees are definitely a studio band, regardless of how narrowly or broadly you choose to define the term studio band.

Absolutely! It's all about the music, isn't it?

What does that mean, and why would you think it? They've toured the country several times since the '90s. I've never seen a Phillies game. Shall I assume they're dead too?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

They call Alabama the Crimson Tide / Call me Deacon Blues
Yep, that song was surely a hit last night, especially amongst us Crimson Tide fans! I read in the newspaper where this was their first concert in Alabama, so I'm sure they made a point to add it into the playlist.

It means "I thought they were dead."

I'm not sure why I thought that.

You may think what you like about the Phillies. Certainly a lot of them are dead, though.

I saw them a year or so ago and they put on an excellent show. Michael McDonald--never really cared for him--opened the show and migrated on stage for most of Steely Dan's set too. Quite good.
