MWF: Now I get it!

The other day I got a new brush and my first puck of MWF. I did a test lather and was well impressed with the photogenic result.

After seeing those results, I had high expectations for my next shave. However, I was left unimpressed as the lather from the bowl spread thin on my face. I just about saved the shave by loading a bit more product and face lathering.

Then I read MWF works better when you face lather, which I prefer. Nothing to lose I soaked the puck in hot water, poured out the soapy water and washed up with it. Loaded 1 minute and face lathered. Best shave ever! I was so impressed with Tallow I started the Cult of Palmolive, which gives similar results and costs next to nothing. But this blew my precious Palmolive out of the water! It was so thick and slick I shaved with a feather blade with carefree abandon. I was getting 2x to 3x as many strokes per turn of the razor. The cushioning was fantastic and the smell is so much better than Palmolive (which is miles better than Arko which smells like a urinal cake).

This was my experience exactly. While I can get a reasonable bowl lather from MWF, it performs best for me in a face lather.

MWF does have a different scent than anything else , but it's not bad. Once you get the lather right though, it feels soooo good on the skin!

MWF gives me thin lather but very slick lather.
I prefer that with a straight.

Big fluffy lather isn't any good if your razor feels like it's dragging.
I can't quite remember which cream did that for me recently.
It may have been Old Spice. I have gobs of nice thick lather, but it wasn't slick at all.

What's funny is that for most of the year I had MWF I was marginally impressed. Sure it would "take" once in a while but it was often just a foamy, meringue-y deal. About 3/4 of the way through the puck I was able to get consistent results but after all that, I looked forward to other soaps. Now I'm thinking of getting another puck! Go figure.

I think it is perfect for shaving in the winter months because it is so moisturizing (it makes my face a little greasy in the warmer months). As far as smell goes I'm surprised anyone would not like it, I find it mild and quite neutral, more of a fresh powdery scent. I think it is one everyone should try, especially for the price.

On a side note I own the ceramic dish, and while I think it looks good I consider it cheap quaility for what it costs. YMMV

I, too, prefer MWF in the cold, dry weather because it doesn't dry one's skin. I bowl lather MWF; I've found that I need to leave more water on my brush, this applies to boar and badger, when whipping a lather; and I whip the bristles' tips only. The result is a moist and creamy lather.
