Mug/scuttle question

I just scored this little beauty... and... I don't know how to use it!

Fill it up with hot water, stick your brush in to soak. Load your brush with soap, lather, stick your brush in the left side while you do your first pass. It will keep your brush toasty warm, and you can dip in to the right side if you need to add some water.

Very cool, old school scuttle. It's best used with face lathering. I think, back in the day, it was common to apply the soap directly to your wet face and then place it in the tray with holes (lots of variation on this, btw). You can load more into your brush when needed and everything stays warm.

this isn't a moustache mug? an antique dealer told me it keeps people's moustaches out of their drink or vice versa... she may not have known what she was talking about though.

the ones she showed me didn't have small holes, but more of a cutout near the mug sides.

Thank you all!
I shall try different riffs upon the themes.
Thanks Again!

( A mustache cup has one big opening against the lip of the cup and a flat plate/sheet to about half way across the mug. The scuttles have small holes in the plate and are somewhat bowl shaped from the edge to the plate bottom.) If you find a "Mustache Cup" mis-marked it will save you about $30-$50 if you want to try one.

don't know if i'm using it right but i cut a puck of soap in half and put it on the shelf half keep brush on top of the soap and dip in the hot water and work the puck with each pass

another type of a scuttle is more of a pot in a pot. you fill the bottom pot with hot water and use the top pot to build lather and place it on top (or into) the bottom pot to keep lather and brush warm.

Thanks I shall try that too!

That one has drain holes in the bottom. That top portion is designed more for holding a puck while you load, I believe, allowing some excess water to drain below.

I think he is speaking of a scuttle like this G5 from Georgetown Pottery:

Interesting, Does it have a bowl that fits in the top for a puck and making lather??

You would keep the puck of soap in another container. You would load the brush, then move to the scuttle to build lather, adding water as needed.

Thanks, I did something similar today. I placed steaming hot water and brush in the scuttle and put Bigelow's Shave Cream onto my wet face with my fingers. Then I used the hot water from the brush to build lather on my face. I could then move the lather on my face with the brush to re-lather areas for a couple passes. That worked quite well. BBS! I am, to most folks surprise, finally, learning.
Thanks for the info!
