What's new

Muehle R89

I just bought one on-line. The price was £25 with postage and packaging, which seems a bargain if it's as good as the reviews suggest. I am currently using a Parker 96R (which I find gives nice shaves) and a 98R (which I find quite tricky to use, but it seems that the blades don't align perfectly so I am going to contact the seller about a replacement). It seemed wise to buy a razor of proven quality so that I can be confident about the tool I'm using when improving my technique given that I haven't been using a double-edged safety razor for very long.

If I like it as much as I hope I shall, I'm thinking of buying an R41 as well.

I'm sure you'll be quite happy with the R89. It's a great shaver, and IMHO the best production Razor made today.

+1

I totally agree with Phil, if I had to have just one DE razor, this would be the one. There is very little on the market today that can match it in overall quality, certainly Parker can't, and in my opinion Merkur can't either. :tongue_sm

Well, I got mine on Monday. This is the first DE I've used in over twenty years (the last one was my Dad's old Gillette adjustable...I'm not even sure which model). I was excited about trying DE shaving again, but I was also set for a steep learning curve. Boy, was I wrong. I've shaved three times with it and the included Derby blade, and quite frankly I've been stunned by how simple and yet effective it has been. Zero nicks or burns and great shaves so far. Enjoy yours!

It's certainly a lovely razor, capable a providing great shaves. The only thing that has tempted me away from it was the purchase of a Pils - RAD got the better of me!

Same here; I reckon it would be a great deal at double the price, given the sheer quality of the thing's finish compared to Merkurs.

Only thing that causes me to neglect it a little is my new Feather All Stainless

Which online store did you purchase it from? £25 converts to $38.17 USD, which is cheaper than the $45-shipping-included R89 I've found from a US retailer.

Of course shipping may be higher if it's coming to US from overseas thereby negating any savings but I'm interested in comparing anyway.

I gave the name and URL but when I previewed my post it transpired that the company or individual is a filtered vendor here. I can say that it's a UK company and perhaps the exchange rate from Germany is quite good for us.

I hope there are no problems with my order!

Can't say it any better than Phil. It is the best out there. I shave with mine every morning.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Shaving Shack has them for 25 Pounds but that doesn't include shipping. I purchased mine from them. Many of the English retailers have the R89 for around 25 Pounds.

Thanks. I've noticed this as well but the conversion rate plus postage puts it at or over the $45 USD shipped I've found it for at Superior Shave.

Well the obvious answer is then to order a bunch of other stuff with it! I find that with a large order, I save a lot of money over ordering from the US because even with the shipping the overall prices for most of the European goods (TOBS, T&H, Trumpers, etc. etc.) are cheaper.

Actually though, I recall that one of the stores had free shipping to the US a while back for Father's Day. Nice.

R89 is a seriously good and smooth razor. It is the only modern razor i own and i have a desire for no other - apart from the stainless feather, but not at that price!

It arrived today. It included a Derby blade and a pack of Gillette 5+1 7 o'clock Sharp Edge blades.

This razor is incredibly well made. It's absolutely flawless and is a bargain at the price.

I put in the Derby for my first shave as I have been using a Derby blade recently in another razor. I must say that I really don't seem to get on well with Derby blades, particularly for the first shave, but it was a lot smoother this time. The razor is very easy to manoeuvre and is much kinder to my skin. I'm going to try a different blade tomorrow, however, as I think that a sharper blade (perhaps a Feather or one of the Sharp Edges) will deliver the right result. I don't mean that as a critique of the R89; if it can make a Derby give me an acceptable shave on first use then it has already proven itself worthy :tongue_sm The only thing I need now is something that can't be purchased, and that is superlative technique :biggrin1:

I have the EJ version and agree with all that has been said. I find that the sharper blades do much better in this razor. I probably saved myself a ton of money by getting this razor first.

I like the Personna reds in the EJ. I tried a Shark in it yesterday and got a great shave with the combo.
