What's new

Mr Simpson:"Now you are a Duke!"

Last week I received my first Simpson shaving brush: the Duke 3 Best.
This brush is completely different from any other brush I've ever used during my fourteen years of wet shaving experience.
Its knot is VERY densely filled, with extra dense Simpson Best Badger hair, and is able to hold a LOT of water, much more water than most other brushes with equal knot size, which is 23 mm.
Exactly this let me somehow disappointed during my first two attempts to build up a good lather.
I simply was unable to get the right water/cream mix.
After several years of wet shaving, for the first time after a long time, I felt, again, like a newbie.
But I didn't want to give up, absolutely.
I repeated to myself: "Simpson produces some of the finest brushes in the World and the Duke 3 Best, in particular, is one of its most popular and appreciated brushes".
I had to correct something during my lathering process.
And I did, on day three.
I used more cream in my bowl than I usually do and, most important, I did something I never do with my other brushes: after running my brush under hot water for about thirty seconds, I slightly squeezed the base of the knot.
Not to much, just a bit, I wanted my Duke to be well wet, but not overloaded with tons of water.
BOOM!!!
I got that fantastic lather I was looking for with my Duke 3 Best.
Now I love this brush.
It is my new shaving jewel.

P.S. Thank you Mr Simpson for giving me the title of Duke!:001_smile

Nice! I also give my brush a good shake or two to get the bulk of the water out before hitting the puck. It's always easy to add more water later if needed. :thumbup1:

I have been looking at a Duke 2 Best, but now I am thinking I might need to splurge and get the D3.
Thanks for the information on how to get a good lather with the brush

What a coincidence, I also got my Duke 3 (best badger) in yesterday. When I did a little testdrive, I was amazed about the amount of water it can hold.
I already was amazed with the smaller ones I have, the KH2 and the Special, considering the smaller knots.

After giving it a few shakes after use, the water just didn´t go out the brush. I squeezed it gently and hung it in the stand, but it was still very moist . Fantastic brush!:thumbup1:

Great to hear Marco- glad that you love the Duke. I have resisted the urges so far........ and with the Eagle taking off for a B+B group buy, I might be able to resist for a little longer. :wink2:

That eagle is going to be a superb brush in best...sort of sad they didn't decide on a super grade but oh well...it's still such a classic shape!

I'm between if Simpson Best is better than Simpson Super atm. That includes the 2-band Super. Course that's the same for every brush I have just about. Of course YMMV but it sure surprised me just how awesome the Best grade is!

 Can I join in?

It's becoming a blooming marvelous brush.

It is 2 band Super hair, they might be available from Bullgoose in the near future.

if you can't wait for the 2 band duke (first i've heard but VERY intruiging) you can pick up a 2 band Grosvenor from bullgoose, which, appearance wise, is a very similar brush. Mine looks like the Duke pictured. Better hurry up though...only 1 left!
