What's new

Moving to Texas...

Dallas area to be exact. Since neither my wife nor I have any friends/family in the area and have never been there, we've relied upon the internets to try to find a place to live. Therefore of course I thought it a fine idea to inquire here on B&B. A little background, my wife has accepted a position which requires relocation to the Dallas area TX, we're not confined to a specific area so we're looking for the best town/city to suit our needs. We will be renting due to the potential need to relocate again soon and we need a 3-bedroom residence (we have a two year old son and we need an office). We've found that a 3-bedroom apartment costs as much as or more than a house so we've decided to rent a house. These are the cities in random order we've narrowed our search down to and any opinion, advice, feedback (good or bad), and information is warmly welcomed and appreciated from all:

1. Frisco
2. The Colony
3. Grapevine
4. Coppell
5. Flower Mound
6. Richardson

Feel free to add towns/cities that we should also be researcing... Thanks again in advance.

All the places you're looking at are fine. A lot depends on where your wife will be working.

Flower Mound and Frisco have experienced tremendous growth over the last few years. The Colony is a nice community (my Dad's been there for a little over a year now), but it's distance from Dallas and lack of access to major highways (until recently) has limited it's development somewhat. It's a little time consuming to get to Dallas (although not as bad now that SH121 and SH190 - both toll roads - are open). Coppell and Grapevine both grew up around DFW Airport; I'm not familiar with either community.

I work in Richardson (I live in NE Dallas, right next to Garland). It's an older and developed suburb, and very easy to get from there to other places around the DFW area - Central Expressway runs right through it, and it's very close to SH190 and LBJ Freeway (IH635).

I have no idea as to which community would have the most rental houses available.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

I would also agree that any of your choices would be fine. The thing about the Dallas area, when you travel from city to city, they all look alike after you have lived there awhile.
I lived in there for 6 years, you will enjoy it once you learn how to get around.

I appreciate the feedback...

My wife's home base will be wherever we are living. Her position is mainly for sales so she'll be on the road travelling most of the time, access to major highways would be a plus. Toll roads are fine as it can be expensed... Another checkmark for The Colony and Richardson. :thumbup1:

While I can't be of much help, I do have family in the DFW area and they enjoy it quite a bit. What I can offer is a heartfelt welcome to Texas!

I'm more familiar with Arlington and Fort Worth areas. I live in South Arlington. When you get settled, please shoot me a PM and my wife and I will drive your way for a few hours. Maybe, meet at a restaurant. You really should visit Deeley plaza where JFK was shot, if you haven't. Something...

And, welcome, by the way!

sorry, I'm afraid I can't be much help with the DFW area....I cringe anytime the need arises that I have to drive in the area ; just consider me at home in Mayberry :001_cool:

Texarkana is growing a lot and they're doing tons of new roadwork that's looking more and more Dallas-ish to me...thank goodness I know the backroads and smaller streets that get me where I want to be

But, from what I do know, Grapevine is pretty easy to drive in, I have a friend that lives in The Colony and loves it. It's a bit further, but McKinney also seemed pretty nice/easy to get around the couple of times I've been through there.

But, you're better off taking the word of the DFW locals, I just mainly wanted to say Welcome to The Republic of Texas! :cowboy:

I don't want to thread jack, but instead of starting a new thread. I figured I could ask it here...

I've been considering relocating to the Dallas area. I'm a younger (Mid to late 20's) single male, and would be working in the downtown area.

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any areas to live in, or any to avoid.

There are lots of trade-offs. Although your son isn't yet school age, part of what drives property values is the reputation of the school district. All of your six candidates are in school districts with good credibility. Also, the Plano / Allen area along US 75 and served by toll roads (George Bush and SH 121) offer good school districts and good access.

Some folks think that being relatively close to downtown Dallas is important because of the Arts District and the many entertainment venues. If you're in that group, Richardson is a good choice.

If being close to DFW airport is a consideration, Grapevine and Coppell are well situated.

I've been in Richardson long enough to put two generations through the schools and I have no regrets about deciding to locate there.

Whatever your decision, welcome to the Metroplex. Let me know if I can be of help.

So where is your wife working? I would get a place close or fairly close to where she works. The traffic is pretty bad so I wouldn't be too far away.
Do you have kids? That would make a difference on the schools. My wife and I live and both teach in Plano.

On that note, I would suggest either Grapevine or Richardson.

Both are nice areas and centrally located.

I grew up (half way.. since I was 12) in Plano. My best man (and best friend from highschool) grew up in Richardson.

That having been said, Grapevine has newer homes, as does Flower Mound, The Colony, and the newest being Frisco.

Personally, I'm fairly partial to Richardson.
