More questions on Boots (chippewa)

Made in the USA!

I like Chips. I don't own a pair, but I go and look at the ones they make for LL Bean ever few weeks and almost get my wallet out... but I never do.

I have a pair of Wolverine 1K miles and a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers. The chippewa's are, in most boot afficionado's opinions, the best value for the buck, especially in an american made product.

I've heard the Wolverine 1000 mile boots do not hold up very well. My personal vote is for White's Boots semi dress. A great deal of leather to choose from too.

I like the idea and looks of the whites boots but I am trying to keep it under $300 and I think they are way over my price range

anyone know the difference between the Chippewa Apache and Service boot...?

http://www.zappos.com/chippewa-american-handcrafted-gq-apache-lacer-boot-brown

Which one is the one made for LLBean (Bean's Kathadin Boot...? Bean's Version is only $210, Zappos gets $259 for Service Boots, $169 for the Apache GQ Laceups) I ordered the Apache's for the price to try on given Zaqppos free return policy...may try the Beans as well (I get free ship and returns from them too with my llbean card, just to see the difference)

But if anyone can comment in the mean time would be appreciated...

The LL Bean looks like it is the Service Boot. But I am not sure.
I was also looking at the wolverine and the iron rangers, what do you think of those?

My iron rangers have not arrived yet. I just ordered them. My W1K's though, I like a lot. They are less substantial than my other Red Wings, and they have a leather sole. I took them in to a shoe repair shop yesterday to have a vibram raptor 1/2 sole put on them for traction and a little bit of protection from water breaking down the leather outsole.

I like the W1Ks a lot, or I wouldn't have spent 35 dollars for the raptor outsole. I have them in Cordovan #8 color, and it's pretty nice... though a tiny bit on the purple side. Anyway, I like them so much that I ordered the iron rangers so that I don't ruin the top of the W1K boot on my motorcycle shift lever.

I thought about buying a custom built White's, but I was hesitant to blow 400 dollars on something that can't be returned if they mess up the fit, or if I don't like the while high arch support and higher heel gimmick on the White's. I know, you can lower the heel by 1/4 inch, but I just couldn't spend 400 dollars on something I can't return if I hate it.

Also, like the W1K, white's semi-dress is only a 5 inch shaft, about an inch too short for what I feel comfortable in for motorcycle boots. If you want a 6 inch shaft (heh), you have to go up to the Bounty Hunters, which have what is in my opinion an ugly as heck heel counter on the outside of the boot that the semi-dress doesn't have.

Danner has a very high quality control, I'd buy with confidence.

The American boots have a high quality control. Overseas made Danner aren't as good. I had a pair of Striker GTX boots which were made overseas and within a few months you could see a few issues with them. While not huge, they were issues I wasn't expecting from Danner.

I own a pair. I got them for a steal of a price(like $70 bucks). The leather isnt as nice as the Iron Rangers or Wolverines(but they are substantially less $), and it scuffs pretty easily. Also not a huge fan of the waxed laces they come with, but that's an easy fix.

Overall its a quality American made boot for a reasonable price. Also check out Thorogood Boots.

I think this depends on the model. I was at LL bean today looking at three pair of Khatadin Iron Works Chips... one was a goretex version, which I would not even consider. The other was in what they call "apache" leather. I didn't care for the leather. I would describe it as a moldy chocolate color, with lots of pullup and a waxy feel to it that scratches very easily, though every scratch I inflicted on the model boot with my fingernail buffed out very easily. I didn't care for the feel or the color, but that's very subjective.

the third boot I looked at was in the color "cordovan." This leather is real nice, IMO. I would not be surprised if it turned out to be Horween Chromexcel #8. It feels waxier than the horween leather on my cordovan wolverine 1K miles, but it's possible that my 1Ks were that waxy when new and it's just worn off. Anyway, these, the cordovan KIW Chippewas at LL bean would be my choice if I was looking to buy another pair of boots and not spend over 300 bucks. They are dressy enough, but also would make a nice winter knock around boot, IMO.

I think I have narrowed it down to Chippewa Service boot or Danner Explorer. The Danner has a gortex liner and I have seen them on a few sites for the same price point

I've had my Chip for 17 years new. Great boots that very comfortable. My only regret is not getting another pair veggie they switched to issuing Danner.

If anyone wants a pair of suede black Chippewa service boots for just the cost of shipping, PM me. Size 9 1/2.

They have been worn probably 40 hours. They just don't work for me. My feet are very picky. Oh, and they have a spot of blue paint on one of the toes.
