Milling MWF into a Bowl?

I have just ordered a round of Mitchell's Wool Fat to try. I want to put it into the old Yardley wooden bowl I just restored. Should I mill the whole soap into the bowl? Or, should I just trim it to fit and press the extra shavings into the bowl? I don't want to waste a sliver. If milling, what is the simplest way?

Thanks.

I milled my old MWF into the porcelain container that I received as a Christmas present. At the time, I did not have the grater that I recently purchased from Sears, so I just chopped the soap up into very small pieces with a knife. Otherwise, I followed the directions in the sticky thread on milling. I have used the MWF a couple of times every week since Christmas, and I have not had any problems.

Good luck!,

I used a cheese grater (the finer holes, but not the toothed things that produce flakes instead of strands) and grated the whole thing- it worked just fine. Milling around the edge would probably work just as well, but when I tried this approach with another brand of soap, it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. It was difficult to get it to set just right, and there were air pockets on the bottom and around the edges, and the density of the new puck varied between the milled and the full puck, plus the areas in between (it was milled into a glass container and I could see the problems directly). Maybe I'm just not practiced enought for this approach? When I mill soaps in the future, I'm just going to shred the entire puck. It you do it over a bowl of several paper towels, you probably won't lose much. Whichever method you choose, good luck!

I used a cheese grater when I milled my MWF into a glass container. I've also just chopped soap up into very small pieces and pushed them into a container. Either method works.
