Military Mount Meerschaum

So about 15 years ago I purchased my one and only Meerschaum pipe when I was in Rome, Italy. It is a beautiful half bent with a typical imitation amber mouthpiece and a military mount stem.

I'd like to get another Meerschaum (and am not going to Italy again any time soon) in the military mount style.

Can anybody recommend any online vendor that has a good selection of military mount Meerschaums? Thanks!

Sinan Altinok has some spigot mounts you may be interested in altinokmeerschaumpipes.com

Army mounts aren't that common on meerschaums, if you want one because you don't want the screw in joint a lot of the carvers are now using a briar style push/pull connector.

+1 on Altinok meers. I have had several and Sinan's carvers are all first rate. They make very good pipes.

What is your budget?

Around $150 to $200. I cannot quite tell from the photos but it looks like the Double Stem pipes are the military mount ones as shown here. Very nice pipes on this page.

I'll try and post a photo of my pipe so you can see. I thought "military mount" was a well understood pipe term, but I see that the altinook page uses "army mount" instead, same idea though. This pipe is actually very similar to the one I currently have except the one here has a silver rim as well, the bowl on mine is just pure Meerschaum. http://altinokmeerschaumpipes.com/detail.asp?product_id=ME626

You are correct, Army and Military mounts are the same thing, and is where the stem without a tenon is friction fit into the shank of the pipe. There is usually but not always a metal collar around the shank, similar to the way soldiers would slip a spend cartridge over the shank if it were to break. A spigot mount has metal on both the bit, and the shank at the friction joint.

Sometimes pipes are made to look like they have a joint that looks like an army or spigot mount but actually use a mortise and tenon joint, this is the case with those Altinok Double Stems.

In my opinion and experience, Fikri Baki makes the best ones...

I commissioned one but still haven't had the chance to smoke it yet. It's not a true military mount, it's acrylic into silver... true MM pipes are silver into silver.

I don't believe the Altinok ones are MM, but I'm sure Sinan can always commission one for you.

That is not true. An Army/Military mount is just the friction fit (no mortise/tenon). A Spigot is a special case of an Army Mount that is Silver into Silver.

I have an SMS lattice cut bent brandy with a military mount and the shank is capped with a sterling olive that extends into the shank. Nice smoker, reasonably priced, and a proper back cut lattice.

Old post, but Sultan has good pipes. They are located in Ankara, but I have met the owner personally on a few occasions own one of his pipes. He also sells little five dollar pieces, smaller..good for a quick smoke in very simple designs although I do not believe they're available on his site. He would probably be willing to sell them to you if you bought say $100.00 worth of them. Sounds silly but I had one I used for almost a year for a quick smoke at work until I dropped it and it cracked, would have had back ups but I handed them out to friends when I got back.
