Microsoft Word: Is there an open source alternative

that's Mac compatible? I'm a Mac user but don't want to pay to use the Mac version of Word. Is there another open source/free Word document program I can use on my Mac? Any info would be appreciated.

I take that back. I'm downloading OO for OS X...! Then why are they still putting out NeoOffice!?

*edit*

Apparently, OpenOffice for OSX is still unstable. NeoOffice might be the better choice.

+1 on OpenOffice/NeoOffice ...

I've used OO on my PCs for years without trouble, and NeoOffice on my old Mac. Good stuff, and compatible with loads of other wp file types (both opening and saving).

That's strange, I have been using OO since I got my Mac about a year ago with no problems. It is still working with Snow Leopard as well.

*shrug*

Who knows any more. Honestly, it could just be that Sun didn't support OS X so the community made NeoOffice and now since Sun is supporting it the community doesn't want to embrace obsolescence?

The OO port is newer, it wasn't around when I got my mac 2 years ago, but if it works... hell, that's all that matters!

you would be correct. I just tried downloading it and installing it on my desktop with no success. it's a little buggy. looks like i'm gonna try neooffice

I thought you needed to have X11 to run Open Office on the Mac. Has this restriction been removed?

It is for the standard Oo_Org package, I don't believe it's necessary if you install the Cocoa NeoOffice port, though.

You can also install AbiWord if you just need a word processor and not an entire Office suite (although the whole thing is worth having IMO).
