What's new

Merkur HD

Well I started wet shaving with a DE a week ago now at the urging of a friend ho gave me a Gillettte old as a gift with some blades and a cream thats called WAR i have not seen it mentioned here yet. Today i got my order from Lee's it was a walnut holder a Merkur HD and a vulfix super badger brush. At first i will say i was a little disappointed because the brush doesn't say vulfix it says Lee's razors on it. It is made in England but apparently labeled for Lee's. I have been using a drug store bought cheapo brush probably boar hair. Well yes the brush makes a big difference the badger vulfix (Lee's) is far superior in making lather and holding water for repeated passes. The Merkur HD was loaded up with an Astra blade which I favor over the Derby blade and went to work shaving. This is by far the best shave i have had yet. The Merkur is more aggresive than the Old and i ended up with a couple of weepers but nothing major at all and I got the smoothest shave yet. This may be because of improved technique and a better lather with a better brush. I plan on trying a different cream and or soap in the near future as i still don't think i'm getting the best lather from this cream. So this weekend I am going to hunt down something i can buy locally. I know i can get the C.O. Bigelow cream but i would also like to try the soaps. Thanks for taking the time to look at this I just wanted to fill you all in on my progress.

I am about 2 weeks in myself and the Merker HD is my starter razor and so far I am really happy with it. I love the weight it has and I find it just gives me a great shave.

OK today i decided to try a different cream from the WARS cream my friend gave me. I went to the store and picked up a large tube of C.O. bigelow (proraso) and used a small bowl to lather. I really like this cream it lathers great and the tingly feeling is nice and so is the price. Seem like a nice simple cream that i will keep in my growing inventory of shaving essentials. I know you have all tried this stuff but i'm just trying to keep you all informed of my newbie progress. I still have to try other blades as i have only used derby's and astras of which i am favoring the astras at this time.

The Merkur HD is probably my favourite razor. WARS cream from Poland is great stuff. You can read the reviews on B&B. Both the Astra and Derby are good blades. YMMV, but a couple more good ones to try are German Wilkinsons and the red pack Personna blades.

The personna blades was my next experiment then later on the feather blades. I will also have a straight blade coming very soon. I'm just working on getting the things that work the best for me and keeping it basic once i find my favorite items i will stick to them. The HD has been great so far i love it.

Congratulations, Vinniel, on your great success! Sounds like you are already enjoying the use of good tools and have good technique as well. Great post, and very helpful to others to describe, as you have, what you are doing, what you are using, and how it's working for you. Keep up the great posts!

Just updating i decided i don't really like Derby blades i prefer the astra blade but i will be purchasing different blades to see what works best for me.

If you're looking for suggestions, consider a sampler pack. You can try a half-dozen or so for a small price. I'd pick a pack that includes the Red Personna and Feather blades. Other folks have their favorites, too, that can usually be found in these packs. West Coast Shaving is a great place to find these.
