What's new

Merkur hd 38c/1904 aggressive or no?

I'm hearing a lot of people talk about agression in razors. I am still new to this but I own 7 razors. a NEW from 1930's fat boy, slim adjustable, gillette from the 40s (open comb) 79' gillette black razor (not sure the name right now) merkur 1904 and a merkur hd 38c long handle barber pole. My question is... Which one of these might be considered the most aggressive. Also out of these are there any that would be considered agressive when it comes to razors overall. I just would like to know what exactly agressive should feel like. So far I've gotten my closest shaves with the merkurs and the NEW. Please let me know. Also are the adjustables on 9 as agressive as say the most agressive razors out there? Does agressive mean you just get a closer shave?

Ok I'm done.

OK-

i'll have a crack at some of this:thumbup:

The adjustables- well the clue is in the name-adjust them to your taste, but open up the TTO doors before you change the setting or else it won't work.

The Merkur 1904 copy is really nice. Very mild

That's what I know- I expect more members will advise you on your other queries, this shaving thing gets addictive does it not :thumbup1:

I would say in terms of most aggressive to least aggressive probably in this order:

Gillette New open comb (not sure if short comb or long comb.... but still probably more aggressive than the following either way)
Gillette 40's open comb (don't know which one..... but same as above)
Fatboy or Slim on 9 (someone else might know whether one is more aggressive than the other.... but I'd say they're close)
Merkur 38c
Merkur 1904 (I assume solid guard bar.... there's also an open comb)
Gillette '79 black handle (most likely a Super Speed)

I would say that a Gillette New is maybe a 7 on the aggressive scale assuming a Muhle R41 is a 10. The aggressiveness of the New Type head will depend on the type of comb and handle weight and length. I have a Big Boy New Short Open Comb Deluxe which is a heavy, long handle and is very aggressive, but I also have a short comb New with the shorter and lighter common bar handle that is more mild. Other razors that are more aggressive than the New that I have used would be a Fatip, Above the Tie Atlas stainless steel R1 head, Cadet, R41, ikon OC deluxe. I'd say the Gillette adjustables set on 9 are not as aggressive as most open combs except for a Merkur 41c (1904) open comb which is quite a bit milder IMO. If you want to know what aggressive is, pick up a Muhle R41. It is the most aggressive DE razor out there IMO. At least that I've tried. Super Speeds are very mild in general.... but are very smooth and effortless shavers IMO. Hope this helps.

Out of the ones you list, probably the Gillette New... How much would depend on whether it is the short comb or long comb NEW model

If your "40's" is actually an earlier Old Type... That will show more blade than the rest.

Hey when you say Merker 1904 is mild would you say that it's as mild or milder to the EJ DE89?

For me they are about the same.
