What's new

Merkur 37C or 39C?

First off, new to the forum. Been browsing many of the threads for the past few weeks. I am still a newb at wet shaving with a DE razor but my progress is coming along nicely. The nicks and cuts have been reduced dramatically with improved technique and better prep and after a month, I am starting to really enjoy shaving.

Now back to my question. Im looking at getting one of these slant bar DE razors, but I am not sure of which one to go with. I am currently using the 23C because I have bigger hands and I like the long handle which made me lean towards the 39C. I haven't had any issues with the 23C though and really like how it has performed thus far. I know I dont need it, but I would like to try something else that might be better than what I have now. Any input/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Just received my 39c today and I couldn't be happier.

Been shaving with vintage Gillettes for years, so I wasn't afraid of the sledgehammer, and it definitely didn't disappoint.

Welcome to the forum. I don't have an experiences with Slants, but from what I've read on here they are for the pros due to the angle. I too have big hands, maybe you should try a Heavy Duty first like the 38C first. If you are hell bent on switching it up, I'd say the 39C because of the larger handle size.

I have the 39C that I purchased late last year when there were no 37Cs to be found. I wish I had waited for the smaller handled 37C. I like those better, and I find the 39C to be HEAVY.

welcome! I had the 39C as my first slant and was very happy with it. I have big hands but later tried a 37C and liked it even better. Some have exact the opposite experience. Not much help here I'm afraid, it's very personal. The difference in shave is minimal at best for me, just a very small preference for the way the 37C feels in my hands here.

Welcome to the site. Either one will be fine, its all about which size you prefer. I have pretty big hands, but give me the shorter handle anytime. I tried the longer one and didn't care for it. I found that the longer handle just seemed to get in the way. Whichever DE I'm using I tend to hold it closer to the razor head anyway.

Wow, mixed crowd here. I see both sides though, as the longer handle might get in the way and add to the weight, while the shorter handle is cheaper and might allow for better control (less weight.) Hmmm, decisions decisions...

Thanks for the replies guys. If anyone else cares to chime in please do.

I use a 39C and 34C. I prefer the longer handle because it makes ATG passes much easier. I find that you can get more control with a shorter handle but since you're already using a longer handle, you may find the 37C awkward. I also have a 38M that is not being used in my sale thread if you are interested in trying a heavy duty first.

I recently asked this same question, here is a link to that discussion: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/324005-I-am-torn-Should-I-get-the-Slant-37c-or-39c

I am loving my 37c. Learning how the blade is supposed to be aligned is a must. Just shaved with a Feather last night in my 37c and it was an amazingly close, irritation free, BBS three pass shave.

Good luck,

Chris

I did a search and your thread did not come up. Thanks for the heads up though. Time to read Turtles reviews.

I have the 37c, but I'm of two minds. I like a shorter handle when I'm shaving my neck (especially ATG), but I like a longer handle for shaving everywhere else. I may eventually buy a 39c and just use both of them during shaving (unless there's a law against using 2 razors for 1 shave ).

The 39c is a BEAST. There's a reason its known as the Sledgehammer. The 37c is heavy already but the 39c is even more-so. Both grip well, and as you said you have larger hands so perhaps the 39c is what would work best for you. It sure is a beaut.
