mergress razor?

Is he still making these? If so how does one get one? I know he would custom the colors that were available but since I have been gone so long I have not had a chance to get one.

First step ... you have to own a standard Progress. mer does not sell them ready-made, he will only modify one that you send to him.

Next, pm mer and tell him you want the upgrade, and work out the details about what color you want the dots to be, etc.

I inquired about it earlier this year, but never got around to sending it in ... if I remember, the price for the upgrade is $36 shipped ... and its worth every penny.

Go for it.

I can always purchase one and send it his way. I will contact him. Hopfully he is still making them.

mer's last post in his vendor thread was back in mid-October, he may be taking a hiatus.

You can also order them ready-made from www.leesrazors.com ... but he's out of stock right now. Put yourself on the waiting list and he will notify you when they are available again.

I purchased one from him. The heads don't line up which makes for a pretty bloody shave. You can buy mine if you like.

Are we talking about the same razor, a modified Merkur Progress?

"Mer" has the customer send him their Progress, because he wants the customer to have already used the razor, and found it's quality to be acceptable. He doesn't want to be responsible for trying to fix Merkur's mistakes.

The issue you describe sounds like the razor was defective from Merkur, and would in no way be a fault of "Mer".

Yes, I'm talking about the modified Progress by mer. It was my understanding that his $35 mod was supposed to correct any Merkur issues. Otherwise all I paid for was a shiny new knob.

Well, I think the correction of any Merkur issues is beyond the scope of what Mer does.

There was a time, when the only way to get a Mergress was to buy a Progress yourself, and send it to Mer for modification. This was supposed to insure that the razor was acceptable to the customer before being modified, as after modification, the razor obviously can't be returned to Merkur for factory defects.

My understanding, is that the modification adds an improved knob, and calibrates the razor so that all Mergress razors have the same adjustment scale; so a setting of "1" for example is the same across all razors.

Here is what Mer says he does to each razor:

I just sent mine off last week and can't wait to get it back. I have used the gillette super speed and a 34C.

Mainly I just use the 34C, which has been awesome.

But I have heard that the mregress is great.

Well talked with mer. I am going to purchase a progress and send it his way. I am still not sure what all I want done to it. Not sure if I want short handle or xl or long handle with short knob or long long.

If you have seen my posts, I am a big fan of the Mergress. In fact, I liked my original Mergress so much I got another one.

I sometimes got an uneven gap with my progress but it could be tweaked until it was even, at least to the eye.

I'd say this has improved since it was Mer'd but it has not disappeared. After all, it is the same handle and head.

Did you make sure the marks lined up? If you put the razor back together wrong the heads will not line up.

True. Eric painted the "^ and I" in black enamel paint so they are more visible with my eyesight. If you don't put it together correctly so that ^ and I don't line up, it is a disaster.

Be sure to use it first! Make sure it works flawlessly and that the blade is perfectly aligned. If not, exchange it.

Chef.....I bought the XL and had Mer install the short nob. Works great for me.

I'll echo what everyone else has been posting. Make sure you like the way that the Progress shaves before spending $36.00 to have it modified. Don't get me wrong, I like the Mergress, but it DOES shave a little on the mild side.

But I put that all on Merkur - not on the modification. Mer's modification is 100% quality.

But YMMV.
