Does anyone know if professional perfumers use Menthol crystals or some other variety of the menthol additive in their aftershave blends? If they don't use the crystals, what do they use?
In whatever form they use it, they sure keep it far away from other scents they are about to use for blending. Menthol is very penetrative. Crystals are dissolved prior to blending. I don't know the ratio.
Menthol is a crystalline solid at RT. It's also very sobule in EtOH. There'd be no reason to purchase it pre-dissolved. In fact, there are good reasons not to (increased shipping cost being a primary reason). My scientific guess (and it IS a guess) is that they purchase the crystals. If they're making up a big batch of A/S, they probably just weight out the correct amount and throw it in. At least, that's how we do things in the plant where I work. Batch solutions are batch solutions, whether they're aftershaves or chemical additives.
