Makita turntable sharpener

I don't know if you folks would know about these. Many of my violin maker friends use them on small tools:

I bought another version of it almost 30 years ago, and at the time there was also an 8000 grit stone available for it, which I have.

I tried it on a new-old Ebay razor today, and it worked great! You don't want to know how fast it set a bevel! One wouldn't want to use the 1000 grit stone it comes with on a razor--it's much too fast--but the 6000 that's currently available might be nice for someone doing a lot of work.

I remember seeing a video where Dovo uses a similar device to set bevels.

I have one of those. I only use it for very rough sharpening. I find it terribly frustrating to use, and the stones get out of flat quickly. Yes its fast, but for precision honing of my chisels, I still prefer manual honing.

That said, I bet it would be great for restorations and crude heavy work though. I bet it would make short work of a wedge, but something tells me it probably won't work so well with taped spines (if that's how you roll).

I have found time and again that setting up a jig to hold an "odd shaped blade attached to an odd shaped handle" is the real test of using power tools on small blades like razors or small knives. For production use yes, for a hobbiest bevel setting is not that time consuming. For grinding out nicks I could see it. Alx
