Mad Men wardrobe where to buy?

Gents

The wife is enamored by this show. I haven't seen an episode. We are headed to Vegas at the end of the month and renewing our vows Elvis Graceland Chapel style. She has a friend that set her up with a dress that is like one from the show and wants me to dress in that theme as well.

In any event browsing some photos the gentlemen on the show are dressed sharp enough for me to consider picking up some attire to add to my office clothing. I noticed Banana Republic has some items. But quite frankly I find there clothing on the small side, I carry a larger muscular frame.

Any word where to go?

Thanks.

Mad Men gets a lot of love here and I do like the vintage cut of their suits but has anyone noticed that in all the V-neck & shirt/slacks at-home scenes Don's pants are sitting awfully high? Of course, I'm only on season 3.

That is how trousers were worn then, much nearer to the natural waist.

I don't think you'll need much to pull off the look reasonably well - a classic suit combo and some nicely combed hair.

Could be a good excuse for more clothing though...

The waist was higher but so were the cuffs on the slacks. There was no such thing as the "Armani break". The look was in the lines so the slacks look like floods to us (and to me when I was a kid). The other thing is that the slacks were thin and tapered all the way down. Anything even resembling bell bottoms were considered flamboyant and rebellious. The suit jacket also tended to be slightly shorter than today.

Don Draper is always well dressed, however look he sports is WAY different than the look from Cary Grant in "North by Northwest". Of course Armani did the wardrobe for that movie. To me, Draper's suits look ill fitted but that was very much the style.

Yup, Brook$ Brother$ is where you'll want to go shopping to look like that.:thumbup1:

+1 Definitely! Also, Brooks Brothers has outlet stores, and outlet pricing on their website, I went to one last weekend and got some shirts. (Their wash and wear dress shirts are awesome).

Ooooh nice Brooks Brother's find. I always seem to like Roger's styling a bit more then Don's, though Roger's is more classic versus Don's modern (for the time) interpretation.

Not so much the guys, though I noticed a squared off tie on Donald during one episode (eww :thumbdown) Otherwise Sterling is looking his elegant self, I'm noticing Lane Pryce's suits more this season for some reason, typical very well cut English stuff, makes me want to go to London and get fitted for a suit! Not sure why though.
The women on the other hand seem different, Joan is gorgeous as usual but Peggy is getting a bit dowdy and seemingly more old fashioned in her dress.

If you are looking for the good value in English cut suits check out
www.tmlewin.co.uk, the also have a NY shop.

Currently overing suits for $350 which normally retail for $800

This is the best value on the market, classic cut suits with super 110 wool and most importantly a floating canvas construction, normally only available on the very top of the range pret a porter suits Zenga, Canali or Savile row bespoke at 10 times the price.

The floating canvas means that a good tailor can modify the suit so it fits like a glove and will hold its shape until the fabric wears out.

Unlike typical fused construction where the front of the suit is glued to the lining which breaks down every time it is dry cleaned and ultimitely ends up looking like a sack.

The Floating canvas is what you see in the movies when the rich are being measured for a suit, an individual patern is created for you as oposed to a made to measure suit where a standard suit is modified to your measurements.

Good call on TM Lewin. Love their shirts.

Much as I'd love to have one my current position would look a little down on my wearing that expensive of clothing.
I was thinking more of if I'm ever in London getting fitted at one of the classic shops (the names escape me at the moment). More of the experience versus actually having the product, thought that would be quite nice too :biggrin1:

+1

One day I hope to be able to afford to get a Savile Row Bespoke suit.

If the art and craft of a Savile row suit is of interest to you, as it is to me check out the archives of

Everything from the material, the individual pattern, the construction and the fittings are explained.

http://www.englishcut.com/

This site is the font of all knowledge on the best of Bespoke tailoring, much like B&B is for Wet shaving. In short everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

If you want a good deal on a nice suit over the internet you've gotta go with indochino.com. There's all sorts of suits for around the $300-$400 range. And you just send in your measurements and they custom fit it to your measurements before they ship it to you.

For the Mad Men look I recommend the Ultimate Gray Suit.
