So i'm back with another monthly review. As before, each blade will be reviewed based on a 2 pass (plus touch up) shave using a Van Der Hagen razor, Henry Cavendish shave soap and a generic Fento badger brush. I run through 2 of each blade and use each 4 times; for a total of 8 shaves per brand. I'll be grading based on sharpness, smoothness, longevity and consistency. Price will be a factor but only of it's very cheap or expensive since most DE blades are pretty cheap comparatively.
This month is Vokshod; a blade that gets a lot of praise around here. These blades are from Russia and the brand is listed as Mostochlegmash. No idea what either name means, but they are teflon coated stainless steel and are currently going for 13.19 per 100 on amazon. A pretty good deal.
There is a website that i believe is manufacturer run: vokshod.eu; but it doesn’t really say anything about the blades or the company.
So how do they shave? Pretty darn well! They’re not what i would consider super sharp, but they’re sharp enough that tugging was not an issue. Generally the blade cut very well and i was able to get a consistently close shave. Not the closest i’ve ever had but every shave had a satisfying result.
One of the main reasons the shaves were enjoyable is because of how smooth these were. I experienced very little irritation over all 4 shaves with each blade, and was surprised at how similar each of the shaves was. I did get a weeper once trying a little too hard to get BBS but it was entirely user error.
Longevity in both blades was excellent, and i feel like i could have easily gone past 4 shaves with both of the blades. What’s remarkable to me is every single shave felt exactly the same. No sharpening or dulling. It’s pretty clear the quality control on these is excellent.
For consistancy these were also top notch. There was absolutely no discernable difference from one blade to the next. I’m confident if i bought 100, 99 would be exactly the same.
So overall, how did these pan out? Despite my appreciation for the quality, consistency, price and smoothness, i did find the Vokshod’s ylacked just a bit in the sharpness department. And each shave, though close, was never quite “there”. That is not to say i wouldn’t buy a bunch if these (i actually may), but just that they’re not THE blade for me. Only a blade that hits every aspect i’m looking for with top marks will get a 10. With that said, i’m giving the Vokshod’s a very solid 7 out of 10.
I actually gave one of my friends who gave up on DE (said it was causing too much irritation) a couple of these to try because i think they’re a fantastic blend of smooth and sharp and would be a literally ideal blade for someone with mildly sensitive skin.
Up next on the review circut, a blade with the coolest name yet: Viking Sword. Till next time, happy shaving!
