Lubricating Merkur Futur

I just received a used Futur and it feels like it needs some lubrication. I've never had to lubricate a razor before. What do I use? Thanks.

You might try soaking it in a hot dishwashing soap/water solution for a few hours, then just working the mechanism a few dozen times.

If you're determined to try lubrication, I'd recommend mineral (baby) oil. Same instructions: soak it for a few hours, then work the mechanism several dozen times. Repeat if necessary.

Shouldn't need lube. I hope nothing is wrong with yours. The Vision is the only one that needs that kind of treatment.

Disassemble it, and use the smallest amount of silicon grease or plumbers grease to lubricate. To Disassemble, open the razor to its widest gap and then remove the cap. Then put your index and middle finger below the head (with the handle between your two fingers) and push and hold down the top of the head with your thumb. While holding down (you will feel the tension of the spring while you are holding the head down), with your other hand, unscrew the handle. Once the handle is off, you will see the place on the handle that needs the grease. Use just the smallest amount. When you reassemble the razor, it should adjust much smoother than before.

I used a Futur for years without issue. I used a Vision for months and it seized up on me twice. Without the benefit of this forum for reference, I used some 3-in-1 oil to lubricate it and it did not harm the razor, as far as I could tell. Whether you should use it on your Futur remains to be seen.

There are a couple of good suggestions here. You can use silicone to lubricate the razor (make sure it is food grade) or dip it in mineral oil. However, you may want to consider letting the manufacturer know of your issue and see what they recommend. They may even replace the razor for you.

I have a Vision and from time to time it needs lube...I have posted before that BreakFree has worked well for me.
