What's new

looking to buy used montblanc fountain pen- any suggestions?

Pen shows are the best bet.
You might find a pen restoration guy who has one for sale, but they aren't a well loved brand in the community so most pen guys pass them over.
Ebay can be tricky. You have to learn up on how to spot the fakes and pass on any that don't have the right pictures.
Even if you can spot a fake really well, Ebay is a total crapshoot.

1. Pen Shows - Yes agree on this
2. The Fountainpen Network -Has a Buy-Sell-Trade section and they should have some good selections. Here is an excellent example of a fine MB you can find there.

3. Ebay but with a caution - You have to be careful. Stuff from China is highly suspect. Look for owners in US or Europe with a story. I once found a great 146 that I am still sorry I ever sold. It was from the '60s. Use to be the daily writer of a person who worked in the German consulate. Still sorry I sold that pen.

Note you will find that pens from the 50's - 70's are more highly prized than the modern ones. The current ones just don't have the feel of the older ones for some reason.

Oh yeah I forgot about FPN. The 1980's/early 90's pens are considered the worst (in terms of the fountain pen nibs) and of course seem to be plentiful. Sometime in the late 1990's the Richmond group clamped down on distribution. Previous to that you could find the pens almost anywhere. I remember going to Office Depot and drooling over them.
