Looking to buy a rolls

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a Rolls Razor, but don't know much about them! I've found this one locally at a reasonable price (so far - it's an online auction), but wanted to check whether you thought it was intact and in good nick. Thanks!

I'd skip this one with the guard off. Seriously.

Just wait and look for one with no brassing, complete, and a strop in hardly used condition that shouldn't run you more than $20-$25 depending on your luck.

If you look at the edge of the blade, doesn't it appear to be ground crooked? It could be the light, but with that guard off, I am thinking somebody did a home honing job and did it poorly. You may not be able to get that blade up to shave readiness. And, with a rolls case for sharpening, you could spend months on it!

Go with Rainman's advice and wait for something in better shape. Make sure you do it though - the Rolls is a great shaver and everybody should have one (or two, or three, or...)

(Then again, it could be the lighting, and the blade could be ok, and it therfore may be the shaver you use for life - who knows?)

I just checked the bay and do not recommend any of the current auctions.

Hi

This isn't on the bay - it's on a NZ auction site. The seller has just added a few more photos - I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at, so thought I'd ask the experts again! Also, can the guard be reattached to the blade easily?

Cheers
Richard

I would echo what others have said, be 100% sure the guard is ok on a rolls razor, i cant help with the fixing of the gaurd sorry but i have 2 of these razors and i can tell you the guard is vital for a safe shave, dont know about postage but they are always on e bay uk and cheap usually.

Glad I saw this post, didn't even know there was a guard!

Does anyone have a pic of the guard in place?

I bought an incomplete kit (very cheap and in a lot, missing at least the hone and strop- and maybe a guard? But with an extra blade). I now know where there is a very nice one, but missing it's handle (so I expect I may be able to get it cheaply too), but not sure again on the guard. Where does the guard rest in the kit?

Well, the guard is not meant for taking off. You can remove it, and put it back, but it wasn't intended. So if you don't see one, it probably hasn't got one.

The guard attaches to the blade. It can be removed and shaved with, as Napoleon says he does, but I have never shaved without the guard. It is a little like removing your motorcycle helmet - you can do it, but....

The guard stays on the blade always so doesn't have a storage spot in the case. It is part of the blade.

Since shaving with one of these is like shaving with a 1" section of a straight on a 3" stick, I can't see the guard doing all that much really, but I leave mine on to protect my fingers more than anything else...

Yes, it's fairly easy to pop back into place. Set one side in place, and spread the bar until you can pop it in on the other side, like a spring clip.

For those who already shave with a straight regularly, or even regular SE users, the guard will likely never come into play. But if you're coming from modern multis or DE, I'd leave it on. I never hit the guard anymore, but it will keep your angle in check when you're starting. If your angle gets too steep, it will intervene and lift the blade off your skin.

When you put the guard back on, it will only fit properly one way round as the little studs on the guard are different sizes. This is so that it will flick from one side to the other depending which way you clamp it into the handle. There is a little sprung ball on the side of the blade.
