What's new

Looking for.

Hi guys,

I am new to DE shaving have not even jumped in yet TOTALLY that is....

I am a little weary now to get a POC DE shaver

I forget which brand makes the All Stainless one instead of that crappy metal they use on the others

not the Ikon that is like 150 or whatever tho:001_rolle

The only Stainless Steel razor that I know of for less than $100 is the Weber. However, almost all of the name brand razors are made of very good chrome or nickel plated brass, which is definitely NOT crappy. They will probably last as long as a SS razor, but the plating might wear a little in 20 or 30 years.

I believe the heads of most modern razors are made of zamak, which is a zinc alloy not known for its durability.

Cumberland that is exactly what I was referring to I could not remember the name thanks!

What kind of razor do you use or recommend besides the Weber

I don't own a Weber, although I would very much like to get one at some point. The only modern razor I have is an EJ 89 which I use with an Ikon Bulldog handle. The rest are vintage Gillettes, which are made of brass -- US Aristocrat, Brit Aristocrat Junior, Brit New short comb and replated Slim Adjustable. All excellent razors and which I prefer at any time depends on my mood.

A razor of little respect, the lowly Wishi, is all plated brass for their top end model. That's the $10 one. There's no pot metal in it.

The cheaper ones are not brass.

Now granted even though it's all brass it still ain't a 1940s Gillette. And their quality control program, while not non-existent, isn't a model that makes Demming proud.

But I like it well enough that I use one for travel. I don't figure any baggage handler or TSA agent is going to flinch it, but if they do I'll get another.

Get an ej89 and if the plating wears off in 20-30 years you can buy another and still have less invested than most stainless razors. Other that that Weber is the best price stainless. I originally wanted a stainless, but I like my ej89l so much I don't see the point any longer.

Your money, your face, your choice--obviously. As has been mentioned Weber makes the least expensive SS modern razors, or so it seems.

But the difference between "pot metal" and something better doesn't really have an impact on how well the razor shaves your face. Just because a razor head is made of zamak, it doesn't mean it isn't a quality shaver. So if your concern is you don't want a POC razor in that you are afraid you will get poor shaves, then I don't necessarily think you have to worry about what metal was used in the construction. You can certainly buy a razor that is a very fine shaver for $20--even less.

How long the razor might last--well that's another thing altogether. But if you aren't sure about DE shaving you may want to experiment with some less expensive models and decide what kind of DE you really want (adjustable, OC, slant, etc), before investing in a more expensive SS razor. Now on the flip side, should you buy a more expensive razor and find it really isn't the right razor for you, you can always sell it on the B/S/T and get most of your money back. Or, like many here, you can just start collecting as many razors as you can get your hands on.
