What's new

Looking for new varieties for shaving creams or soaps?

Hi, I'm new to the wetshaving world, and so far I've been using Proraso shaving cream -- I'm looking for suggestions for other creams or maybe even soaps I could try that hold a general consensus of awesome -- I think it would be cool to try multiple types just to see the difference -- seeing I don't even know the difference between a cream and a soap in terms of shaving? Anyway, I've got a relatively thick beard so something thick and slick lol.

Not many places do soap samples, only creams.

For soaps - for a newbie forget looking for vintage Yardley unless you chance upon it. Van de Hagen Deluxe is available from Wal Mart and is cheap as chips and for the price you might as well try it. Arko is available from Bestshave.net or ebay, MWF and Tabac are good soaps and you can get them online and off ebay. There's also the higher end stuff like Trumper, Truefitt and Hill, Taylors, which are all good (see their websites), and the top end like Penhaligons and Floris which don't justify the price tag. Most you are best getting over the internet.

Out of the handmade soaps - Mama Bears for glycerin soaps, there's also Mystic Water and Mikes Natural Soaps which have good reviews. All available from their respective websites

I see
Vintage Yardley, Mitchell's Wool Fat, and TABAC are also quite often mentioned. Thoughts on those? Of course I can't get them all lol.

MWF and Tabac are my favorites, with MWF holding the lead

You need a good brush to get MWF to lather well, while tabac on the other hand could get thick lather from a qtip

Pistolslap,

I suggest you order these items Arko shave stick, Palmolive Shave Stick, and La Toja Shave stick then order a red tub of Cella. The shave sticks are nothing more than great shave soaps that have been made into stick form. You can either rub the stick onto a wet beard then take a wet brush and swirl it onto your beard building the lather directly on your face. Some choose to grate the shave stick into a container and just build a lather that way. The shave sticks are inexpensive and it will allow you to experience several different soaps. These are very good soaps and are discussed a great deal on this forum. Cella is Cella as many often say. It is an Italian made soft shave soap that many consider to be the gold standard of Italian shave soaps. That is my suggestion let us know what you end up getting.
