Looking for advice on picking my second brush.

Hi.

I currently have a SOC Boar (in Cherry). I really like it. I've been using for about a month now. I like the size of the handle and don’t think the knot is too big for my face. I’ve been face lathering since I got it (using Razorock XXX). I picked the SOC because it has a reputation of being able to bowl lather as well as face lather.

I want a second brush because the SOC doesn’t always dry between uses.

Since I have a nice boar brush, I think I’d like my next brush to be a badger. I think I’d also like it to be able to both face and bowl lather with it. Besides that, I think I’d like a different experience than my SOC. So I think I should be looking at a bulb shaped brush that can used to both, face or bowl lather. I think a budget of around $80 wouldn’t be too crazy, plus it gets me free shipping at most of the online shops.

Which brands and styles should I be focusing on?

Thanks
Frank

The Simpson Colonel tends to be a hybrid or a bulb, and is a good all-around brush. The handle and knot will both feel a bit smaller than the SOC, but both have a good size IMO.

If you want to go a little further away from the SOC you might consider a Rooney 3/1. The knot tends to be more fan-shaped than the Simpson Colonel, but for me the feel of the brush is even further from an SOC.

Thanks! I hit the Simpson's section of WCS's website. Man, talk about information overload. So many different handles and hair types at one time. I haven't looked at Rooney's yet. I'll do that today.

I have not found a brush that I would call "good at bowl and face lathering". I have found brushes that excel at one or the other.

I would suggest that you not try to get a one size fits all brush and go for one that is exceptional at one or the other of types of lathering.
