stubble trouble

Hi Gents,

I am looking for a sweet (pardon the crude lexicon) scent. I love Tabac and just want something to use in the same price range, but with a sweeter scent. Currently, I use Helmut Lang (which I consider a sweet smelling cologne), but that's a little pricey for every/ every other day.

thanks gents,
scott

Thanks for the link. Basenotes.com certainly expands the aromatic vocabulary quickly. I might get a 1oz. tester, although, Dyptique Philosykos (sp) seemed to keep coming up as the real deal. Still, I really like the longevity of Tabac, and at 25.00 bucks per 100 ml, I was just wondering if there's a sweeter/fruity/floral analog out there (that's still masculine, though).A more refined old spice, if you will.

thanks for the feedback,
scott

The trend in these parts is to go for something lesser known, but if you are looking for potent, and sweet, sample some Burberry Touch. It's a powdery violet with a little bit of musk. I haven't owned or tried many gourmands so I've got no suggestions there.

Paul Sebastian PS was mentioned on here a week ago as being a more refined Old Spice. Not a dead ringer for it. I have not tried it.

Jacomo Rouge might fit your bill.

Rochas Man. Sweet and with quite a bit of vanilla.

Saint Charles Shave "New Spice." This one is so sweet you might get a tummy ache from it.

+1 on the New Spice.

It is almost the sweetest one I have, that honor going to the Russian "Barber of Siberia". My 7 yo daughter loves that one. Think Strawberry sundae.

philosykos is amazing! one of the very few niche i'd consider buying. also try body kouros which is derived from bay rum formulas according to luca turin. i've not tried bay rums but i do like body kouros. it's cheap too. :001_smile

+ 1 on the Diptyque....Also try Bath House's 'Spanish Fig & Nutmeg' (available from Charles @ QED for ~ $35 /3.4 oz :w00t: )

thanks for the info gents,

Without getting too philosiphical, since I've been stimulating my olfactory faculties with colognes / robust AS's , I've noticed that my craving for food, cigarettes, other cravings have been mitigated at the very least, if not significantly reduced. I will keep exploring and appreciate your sage advice!

Rochas Man is quite sweet. A bit of lavender, vanilla, chocolate.

Body Kouros (which smells NOTHING like Kouros) is another sweet frag that has a bit of cult following. It has a burnt sugar sort of open.

Caron Pour Homme is a lavender vanilla fragrance that is pretty well regarded/

All of these are pretty reasonable, but tricky to find.

I know that you've been inundated with lots of good suggestions, but for something relatively inexpensive and easily available why not give the C. O. Bigelow line of Barber Elixir Colognes a try? There's available at just about every Bath & Body Works, cost $20/large spray bottle, and I find them to be well-made, quality products that "punch well above their weight".

If you're looking for a sweet note, give either the Black or Red scents a sniff, but why not give all 5 "colors" a try while you're in there, as your tastes might be different than mine. Check out the reviews over at Basenotes if you'd like to see the breakdown, but IIRC the Black is a vanilla/Tonka bean accord, and the Red is based on red currant leaves. I find both to be on the sweet side with little to no progression, and quite refined and formal.

FYI, the other 3 Barber Elixir "colors" are Green (woodsy), Blue (aquatic/oceanic), and White (grapefruit).

One other suggestion for you: Ogallala's Bay Rum & Sandalwood. I'm a fan of sweet colognes too, and this one knocks my socks off!:thumbup1: It's not as formal as the Elixirs, but absolutely luscious.

Oh, I had forgotten about the Spanish Fig and Nutmeg. This is a great suggestion. Not just "sweet" but really a wonderful fragrance all around. Two thumbs up!

By the way, to my nose Grey Flannel is not sweet at all. Almost bitter, especially in the opening.

Let me add one more suggestion here, that came to me this morning after I shaved with Provence Sante Green Tea shaving soap.

How about some Provence Sante Green Tea cologne? The soap smells really nice, and is definitely sweet. I found myself wanting to spray the smell on me so I could prolong the experience. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the cologne.

If it smells like the soap, it might fit the bill perfectly.:thumbup1:

Not sure what you mean by "Sweet," but here are a couple that I use.

I prefer orientals, and I like them slightly sweet with wood base notes. For winter, Zirh Ikon is a wonderful sticky-clovey sweet topnote with lingering wood on the drydown, and for summer Aura by Jacomo is a good one with a slightly plant-ey tinge on the sweet. Like Aloe Vera mixed with sugar and a little bit of wood on the tail end. Both are very affordable, and get some decent press on basenotes.

Not sure this will give you the manliness you're looking for. For what it's worth, I remember "Canoe" being sweet, but it's a bit TOO cheap.

I got a decant of Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger today, and although I like both those ingredients, it was too "sweet" for my nose. It was nicely put together, just not my cup o' tea.
