What is the longest one-syllable English word?
The one that's most commonly cited is screeched (nine letters). But there are also scratched, scrounged, scrunched, stretched, and the plural nouns straights and strengths (all with nine letters).

The 20-volume historical Oxford English Dictionary also has scraughed, scrinched, scritched, scrooched, sprainged, spreathed, throughed, and thrutched. It includes, too, a single instance of the ten-letter word scraunched, from the 1620 English translation of Don Quixote, a novel by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes.

throurpfths. Plural of throurpth. Small mites that inhabit coticules. Overpopulation causes them to swarm onto razors honed on the coticule, and from there they can migrate to the human face, creating hideous ulcers and abscesses. A large colony often spreads through the bloodstream and lymphatic system, infecting the nervous system and brain. Bizarre thought patterns and behavior may occur in severe cases. ("mojo delusion") Proper disinfection involves burying the stones, and switching to nice, sterile lapping film, which is an inhospitable environment to throurpfths. I am currently working on a method of de-throurpfthing razors that have been honed on coticules. Send me any razors that may have come into contact with coticules or other rocks, and I will attempt de-throurpfthication. In many cases, it must be understood that the infestation is too deeply entrenched and I must destroy the razor, so those razors will not be returned.

I have recently decided to offer "de-throurpfthication" as DIY project, soon to be available on my hobbyist page.

Gentleman--I enjoyed reading your answers. You are, of course, right that there are archaic and uncommon words that are more than nine letters. And if you add an 's' to make a word plural there are more words that can qualify. There are actually several words that are the longest common words of one-syllable: 'scratched' , 'stretched', 'scrounged', 'screeched', and 'scrunched'. And since I joined this illustrious group of wetshavers last month, I've discovered another 9-letter, one-syllable word: 'scritched'
