Like but don't love dilemma

As I progress through my box of EdT samples, I separate them into three categories: don't buy, definitely buy, and maybe buy. The first two are self-explanatory. The last is giving me some trouble. The ones that end up in the maybe buy category are scents that (1) I like but wouldn't want to wear regularly, (2) I love but are very expensive, or (3) I like but not enough to pay for a whole bottle. What do you do with these in-between scents? Buy a bottle? Buy a decant? Don't buy them at all?

Buy a decant or don't buy at all unless you have all the money in the world to blow on cologne.

Which, of course, I don't! I may end up buying decants instead of bottles of some of the ones I really like too...seems I have expensive taste. :frown:

(2) buy a decant for these
(1) buy a decant when you have some spare cash
(3) don't bother, if you don't love it now then spend more money on (2)

Yep - expensive taste has kicked me in the wallet more times than I care to admit

Almost makes me not want to sample some of the pricier stuff.

1. Definitely buy a decant. If you do not wear a scent frequently a decant will last a very long time.

2. <I love but are very expensive> I would say buy decants here, too, but larger ones. If you are like me you are unlikely to go through more than a couple of ounces of anything in particular over a reasonable period of time, and your tastes may well evolve.

3. I completely agree. Why would you buy anything you did not love? You won't wear it if you do not love it, if you have anything available that you do love! On the other hand, I "love" scents in every conceivable price range. Keep trying them. I bet you find somethings you really like that are not so expensive. You may still want the expensive ones, too. But it won' be because you are settling for scents you do not really like.

+1 on the decants, especially if your taste varies day to day.

You're better off buying some 8ML decants of stuff you really like.

If, after wearing several different frags you really like, one stands out as something you want to wear much more often, then pop for it with confidence. After you've given it a good test run.

I wouldn't have bought Le Labo Rose 31 if I hadn't been able to really wring it out a couple of times with a decant from TPC. The quick squirt in the store wasn't adequate.

But some of us in here like a variety. The 8ML decants will give you several wearings...I'm sure someone can break it down how many.

Decants!
So far I've only bought full bottles of:
1) Elizebeth Arden Sandalwood (it's too cheap to buy a decant).
2) Tam Dao - love it.
3) MPG Racine - Bought it off BST for a good price, highly recommended by Rorschuck (who's recommended some great ones that I loved) and I love Vetivers.

Other than that, I have about 80 other scents which are all a combination of decants and samples. Some free, many bought. Also, if you watch BST, you may be able to buy a partially used bottle of something you like for a really good price (I got about 35 ml of Douro this way).

For me, even 1 ml is enough for > 5 appllications. I've bought 15-30 ml decants of some of the ones I really like (even love since 30 ml will last me a really long time).

I've also found that my impressions change with time and season so I need to try something for a while to know how much I like it.

When I first tried Blenheim Bouquet it quickly became my favorite and I thought of buying a bottle. I still like it a lot, but it's slipped at least a notch and I'll probably end up buying a decant when my 5 ml from the Penhaligon set runs out.

Another vote for decants. My own tendency is to start liking scents too quickly. To me, a decent decant is in the 8-15ml range, which gives plenty opportunity to really get to know the scent. As others have said, a decant such as that can last quite a long time. Sometimes, too, a scent that didn't immediately grab me will become a fav.
