Learn me on Shavemacs

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a new brush and Shavemacs have really grabbed my attention. But I am a little confused at all the different options.

There are some at WCS, models #25 and #177. I see the Shavemac website has the #177's but I don't see the #25's anywhere. What's the difference? Just handle type? I love the look of the #25 23mm at WCS, any opinions?

Also, is the D01 knot different than their regular Silvertip grade hair?

There's probably more questions, but that's what I can think of right now.

Hi, as I cannot answer your question directly, the reviews section here at B&B has a plethora of information on Shavemac brushes. Hope that helps.

You know I had the same thought when I purchased my Shavemac. I think its the handle but I'm not sure. I brought the #25 Silvertip in 26mm and love the brush. I'm sure if you pm John he will respond. His user name is letterk.

I've owned two Shavemac 177 28mm knots.

Great brush...especially for creams. I've found that both shed quite a bit up front but settle down eventually.

Best

The number is the handle shape.

D01 is a special grade of Silvertip. It has very soft tips, is packed extra dense, and has great backbone.

For the money, you can't beat the Finest grade, which is actually a grade of Silvertip. That's what I'd recommend, especially if you can get it with a 50mm loft. The default loft used to be, and may still be, 60mm for 23mm diameter brushes (probably similar for 21mm knots), which I think is too floppy.

Best to just contact westcoastshaving for that info. My only "off the shelf" Shavemac was a 21mm Finest, and it had a 60mm loft.

See here and here for more Shavemac hair grade info. I'd honestly recommend a Custom short-loft with Finest hair.

I own a 21mm #25 Shavemac in Silvertip and its exactly the same as my #177. My #177 in 23mm is of course a bigger brush but thats all. You wont be dissappointed as both brushes are my "go to" brushes. I also own a Kent LE 2009 and both shavemacs trump the Kent hands down. Hope this helps.

Also, the shavemacs are fantastic for both soaps and creams and lather like monsters!! Have fun.

I have a D01 Shavemac which I absolutely love. The standard loft gives it a lot of backbone and yet it's very soft. The knot is 22mm, loft = 52mm. On the website you have to subtract the handle height from the total height from their charts. (I think you need to click on one of the pictures to see the chart) For some reason it doesn't have loft height on it's own.

I don't own Shavemac in finest, but you would save a lot of money, and I hear they perform really well. Either way you won't be disappointed.

I have been talking with Bernd from Shavemac.com and he has been awesome in answering all my questions. He will customize a brush how ever you want. A custom 22mm knot in silvertip with a taller handle is still only ~$100, in D01 it's about $30 more

But I'm definitely going the Shavemac route when I'm ready to purchase. Customer service from Bernd has been most excellent!! :thumbup1:
