Lazy or Loyal...

I created a membership to SRP when I decided to start with straights, but still find myself sticking to B&B's forums almost exclusively. I barely do more than check their classifieds now and then, but not much else. I also have a Shaving Den & Shave My Face account that are also rarely used beyond checking out their B/S/T boards as well.

Part of me feels a 'loyalty' to B&B...I feel like I've gotten to know a lot of the guys here and am comfortable on who I feel I can trust. OTOH, I wonder if I'm just being too lazy to give these other boards a chance?

Do you guys find time for both here & SRP or do you stick mostly with one or the other?

I signed up to SRP to check out their BST, but apparently you need like 50 posts to see them... I could do that easily, but choose not to. I'm just now getting into straight shaving, and I do continue to check them every now and then, but honestly, I can find similar information here, and am comfortable posting to this board.

It's not that I'm lazy per se... I've just gotten accustomed to the normal posters on this board, and the cost(in time)/benefit(added information) just isn't worth it for me to get into a new community.

I notice a lot of cross posting between boards. I just stick to the one that I like and get the most info from.

I keep an eye on the Straight razor section of the various sites, but spend more time on SRP as I dont really care too much about DE razors these days.

btw...there is no minimum post count to view/buy over srp, just to sell.

I know.. I was not saying it out of the blue. I guess i should have quoted the previous poster to add context.

Um, there's not one here, either. Only to sell or trade.

I've lurked a bit here and there at other sites, but B&B is where I chose to join back in the day, and where I've stayed.

You really can't compare the two sites really. SRP is really dedicated to straight razor useage and for that it has no real competition. B&B is more of a general shaving site really dedicated to DE use and as such it has no real competition. Just my opinion.

I did pretty much the same thing. I've found a lot of good info for straight razor restoration over at SRP, but there are guys here that have the same info. I set up an account with SRP but only have 10 or 15 posts over there. Great place for information, but I'm a B&B'er, myself.

Ah! you are correct! I stand corrected. Don't know what I was looking at to get that impression before.

Honing, hones, lap stones, and some of the finer nuances of the whole straight razor thing are detailed out very well on SRP, whereas some of those more in-depth items aren't covered quite as well here.

Its not a criticism, but in my observation if you want to do restores or if you have specific questions about certain methods and equipment, there is a knowledge base at SRP that is amazing. It may in fact be a little advanced for the layman, as they seem to go beyond shaving and if you're picking up a straight for the first time and you want to get some familiarity with techniques, you could find yourself swimming. B&B and TSD and other shaving forums are suited a bit better, I think, for the purposes of helping someone who is just starting to use a straight.

There are straight razor experts on SRP that dwarf what we cover here. But at SRP its sometimes like looking for information about addition and subtraction on a calculus forum.

That maybe what has put me off of really delving into it. I don't have the tools or inclination to repair/refurbish razors, I just want to maintain the ones I currently own.

That being said, it's also nice to know B&B has experts that will come and post about the calculus of straight razors when they are needed. :thumbup1:

Quite true. This forum is a really great resource.
So far, I've converted 3 guys in my office to DE shaving and they all have spent time looking here. A great resource for the advanced shaver and the beginner.

I used to browse each forum equally, but since the falling out, I've only browsed here.

Its a huge time sink trying to keep up with two forums, and there are less things SR related going on here. Probably better for my time management. However, if you've got some weird, esoteric question, SRP has a better shot of getting it answered. That said, questions relating to actual shaving...I don't think theres a big difference. Lots of cross traffic.

I'm not one to get into forum politics, so I'll leave it at that. I really couldn't care less, though, both sites are excellent. If you can't find your answer here, you'll almost certainly find it at SRP. They have a huge number of very knowledgeable people over there, and I think it's very cool that you can sit there one-on-one with artisans like Williams or Chandler or a well renowned honemeister like Lynn. Those guys are lightyears ahead of me, though, so I just read and learn rather than post much over there.

Tons and tons of great information on both sites.

Have had a look for the past week at the SRP forums, seems like a good place.

As I dont use a straight though, it doesn't really cater for me.

Perhaps in future if I get a straight it may become my favourite place!

BINGO!

Either way, go get a straight.

I couldn't agree more. There is a wealth of information both here and SRP, but SRP is much more into the esoteric level of straight shaving. If I want to just hang out, talk lather and brushes, I'm more apt to do that here, but if I'm talking honing and more advanced topics, I'm going to SRP. That's not to say that this isn't a great resource for the straight shaver, it's just that there are a lot more guys there that are "hard core" about it. Additionally, a lot of them make up a chunk of the guys that post here too. So, it's just easier for me. I'll put it this way, my life would be less "rich" without both sites (because of all that I've learned at both)

Exactly right.
