Lather catcher--blade gap?

Before I take one of these things to my face, can anyone let me know how close the blade is supposed to sit to the edge of the comb? I mean... to me, it seems like the blade sits right at the edge of the teeth, with no little or protection at all. This looks pretty damn dangerous to me. If the blade is meant to be sitting there, what kind of angle am I supposed to use the razor at?

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

Looks like maybe a Kampfe Star there?

I see your point - it's fine. Those two little nubs on either corner do the job. They'll stop the corner of the SE blade from cutting you. The 'newer' ones have larger nubs, but that's after the wedge blades went out of favor. These guys were designed for the wedge blades.

I have one of these, and I use the traditional 'GEM' angle - either flat against the face or just-off flat. No problem. If you don't want to take my word for it - just take it slow.

Good luck.

From your picture, I can't tell what model "lather catcher" razor this is. Many of the early ones, especially pre-1900 models were designed to use a thick wedge blade, similar in cross-section to a wide straight razor blade.

In some cases, a "modern" style SE blade can be used, but in some of these razors, the thinner blade will not be properly retained by the two little "shoes" near the leading edge of the razor.

I suspect you have one of the styles which will not properly position a modern blade. If the corners of the blade ride up over the two small retainers on the comb, I would suggest you don't want to put this combination of razor and blade to your face. :w00t:

Thanks for the feedback. Here's a couple more pictures so you can see what it is. 1904/5 (I think) Star Kampfe. The corners of the blade are held fine by the two nubs on the top of the comb. I'm more worried about how close the blade comes to the edge of the comb. The blade itself is quite secure.

As long as the blade does not ride up over the little stops on the corners of the comb, you should be OK. It would appear that your Kampfe is one of the models that will accomodate either style blade.
