Labor day cooking

I'm not a big cook myself but with labor day coming up most people I know are cooking out. What are your guys/gals favorite recipes for this day? Maybe I can learn something as well as others.

Tandoori chicken, turkey burgers, Potatoes au gratin (cooked on the grill in a clay dish), curry shrimp skewers, curry vegetable skewers for vegetarians in the family, corn on the cob with chili powder and lemon juice rub, taco salad, lemonade, iced tea, gin and tonic and beers all around. OH and steaks with a cayenne pepper, salt, lemon juice and A1 steak sauce marinade.

Unfortunately, my parents will be in Maryland and I'll be going to East Lansing this weekend, so no bbq for us. Maybe next week....

I won't be doing the cooking this weekend, but my friend is doing it right: smoking a massive pork shoulder all day in his even more massive double 55 gallon drum smoker. Duck season opens on Saturday so hopefully he'll have some birds to throw on too.

My sister and her boyfriend restored an old VW camper bus and are driving cross country from LA. they started about a week and a half ago and will get here late Friday. I've corned a beef brisket that I'm going to coat in peppercorns with a little bay, coriander and caraway to smoke for fresh pastrami on Saturday. Sunday we are going to my moms where I'm doing cowboy steaks, and then Monday we'll be at dads where he usually grills brats, polish, Italian and smokes a salmon.

Round One of Labor Day Weekend is a Saturday Mac'n'Cheese Fest at which I'm a judge.

I figured with all that heavy, cheesy, pasta going down, that I could bring some sides that'd cut that heaviness a bit. I've got the butts on right now, which I'll serve as pulled pork with a North Carolina vinegar sauce on mini-buns with cole slaw and pickled red onions. I'm looking forward to it.

!!! Sounds great to me:biggrin:

I'll be cooking 4 butts, 2 spares, and a few sausages on Monday, all rubbed and ready to go.

Tom, you've got my address, right?

Four slabs of baby back ribs in the Weber Smokey Mountain smoker. I butterflied a chicken to smoke also.

The ribs rest in the fridge, slathered in mustard and my rub, right now. Will go in the smoker about 7:30 in the AM.
My wife made potato salad, there will be baked beans, fruit salad, and a tray with sliced tomatoes and bell peppers from the garden.

Have fun and be safe.
