What's new

Kooze's I'm getting too fat and accountability thread

Ok, here's the deal. I'm doing this thread to keep myself in check and hopefully motivate myself.
im in my mid 40's, 5 9' and last Tuesday I weighed 180- which is too much for me.

I became quite disgusted with myself and decided a change was in order. I picked up insanity and did it for the 1st week (started 10/30). Insanity basically is (at least in week 1 :) ) very focused on cardio and lots of lower leg stuff, and jumping. 6 workouts in a row then 1 rest day. On day 6- I felt a tweak in my calf and stopped.

Tuesday was rest day. Yesterday my calf still felt off- so I walked for over an hour outside and said no Ty to insanity.

Today I decided to do p90x kempo cardio. I didn't want to put too much strain on my calf using insanity (oh, I will be back Shawn T). Tony Horton's approach (at least this video) is much less taxing on the joints and it seems he is more focused on form- which I need.

I am doing this process with a friend of mine, which helps. We bought some of the meal replacement and recovery crap, as I just don't get enough vitamins or veggies in my diet and I like to eat. I do take controlled labs orange triad based on the sticked thread in this forum.

my weight this am was 173. I will only update my weight/ weight loss once per week. I intend to exercise 6 times a week.

My goals are weight loss, increased stamina and some tightening and toning and perhaps even some actual muscle definition- but baby steps. After speaking to another member I know I likely will not get 6 pack abs or any other miracle body- and that's perfectly ok by me.

That's it. I always appreciate reading other people's experiences and I figured if I put my journey in writing I will follow through and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

thats it, thanks for reading.

Congrats on the motivation to start.

Here's some interesting reading on three of the most popular home-workout videos: http://www.acefitness.org/certifiednewsarticle/1443/

(I found it very interesting when I was choosing a workout video ... ended up with Rushfit & quite happy. Rushfit seems to have a lot of good qualities, and basically no "bad stuff" included ... although I think their focus on limited equipment may limit them occasionally, specifically around not including a chin-up bar as part of the routine. But hey, if I can't do chin-ups on my own anyhow, then who am I to complain?)

Make sure your calf heals before you resume.

Thanks for the good wishes, my friends. Today I weighed in at 174. After tweaking my calf I took a few days off, and haven't done insanity since. I did some boring cardio at the gym (elliptical and treadmill), just to try to work out the uncomfortableness.

I have done a few p90x exercises, as they are less demanding on the knees and less of a pounding on my calves. It's still damn difficult though, and I am able to do roughly half/ 2/3 of the exercises with tony H. And boy am I sore today. But it feels good.
One thing I noticed is how tight my legs are. I need to incorporate more stretching in my routines to avoid further issues and hopefully to limit soreness and stiffness.

I'm trying to eat less, not snack after dinner and no desserts.

that being said, I went to a pie tasting this past weekend :). I didn't drink for the 1st week, but have had a drink or two the past few nights.

Thanks for the support guys.

I highly recommend picking up a massage tool creatively named The Stick. In 2 days I was able to release knots all the way from my waist through my gluts, hamstring and IT band area that I had been having issues with for a couple months and couldn't get with a foam roller, rumble roller, lacrosse ball, or normal stretching. It seams expensive for what it is but it was the best $50 I've spent on myself in a long time.

Hi, and good luck.

I am a Beachbody coach and I went from 200 lb to 153 (give or take 2 lbs). I can honestly say that exercise, though very important in a healthy lifestyle, isn't the key to weight loss. It's diet, clear and away. You can do "Sword/Hammer" or Level 1 drills till the cows come home, but unless you are eating a clean diet, it won't be very effective.

I would strongly consider a diet like South Beach, which is a good, long term, and maintainable diet. Personally, I've been on Atkins for years with great success but that isn't for everyone. I'd be happy to help you in your journey, just shoot me a PM. Best of luck to you and your healthy goals.

Keep up the good work Adam. I tried insanity a few years back and made it through the first month before a few injuries took me out of the game. A doctor friend of mine told me that most of the injuries she sees in adults (as a family practice doctor) are from insanity type workouts, so be careful. One of my favorite parts of the insanity program was the diet. The food is good and easy to prepare, my wife and I still make quite a few of the recipes even though we haven't done the workouts for a long time.

well hello coach! I appreciate the good wishes and will PM you this weekend.

Thanks RJ. I have been doing some p90x, and on other days the elliptical and treadmill. My leg definitely is feeling better- but damn I should have begun this journey years ago. I guess the key is that i started. I do want to change my diet, and will check out some of the recipes. Any suggestions?

i am not looking for a miracle cure from either of these programs, rather increased stamina and strength coupled with a healthier lifestyle and the benefits that go along with it.

The main takeaway from the diet is eating small balanced meals. Three decent meals with 2 or 3 smaller snacks sprinkled throughout the day. It is basically a fire analogy: you can burn more calories (and lose more fat) over the course of the day if you keep your fire well kindled rather than adding 3 huge logs over the course of the day.

I enjoyed making the smoothies and there is also a very simple turkey burger recipe that my wife still cooks about once a week (ground turkey, red onion, and salsa formed into patties and grilled to your liking).

Today I weighed in at 171, which represents a 9 pound loss in 3 weeks. This is basically the weight I had gained over the previous month+. I do not necessarily see results in the way I look, but my stamina is getting better and my eating habits are improving. I am really trying to avoid post-dinner snacking and eat oatmeal at least 5-6 times per week.

I will check out the recipes on p90x and insanity, and appreciate your recommendation, RJ. FWIW, I think Tony Horton has a much better style and is a better "coach" than Shawn T. I did the p90x yoga x workout yesterday, and cannnot remember the last time I sweat like that.

Good for you! Keep it up!

The styles are highly individual and depend on the workouts - Insanity is so much more intense than even P90X plyo that you sort of need a strict instructor. But Tony is funny and P90X is the Hallmark workout, so I agree, much more enjoyable. Tony says that for people over 40, Yoga X is the single most important workout in all P90X. Drop down in warrior 2 Mr. Haas, this is Yoga X my brother.

A couple more interesting tidbits about P90X is that Maren from the chest and back video is a pornstar, and The guy with the prosthesis in the plyo DVD is one of the actors from Broken Lizard, and was in Super Troopers and Beerfest

Thanks Adam, I will check it out. Awesome accomplishment if you can lose during the holiday season, count me subscribed!

Congratulations on all the hard work. I think bodyweight exercises are some of the best things for you to lose weight and be healthy and strong. Outside of pull ups, dips, push ups and burpees I don't do many other exercises or weight training.

BUT if you're ever interested in adding some explosiveness and cardio, kettlebells my friend. They've done wonders for my core strength and overall functional strength too. Grip has improved as well. Definitely a plus for anyone doing brazilian jiu-jitsu too!

Hey Kooze, how's it going? Are you sticking to the workouts? Part of the accountability is facing it if you are skipping them - own up and then get back to it.

Good to see you keeping t it, Kooze. Best of luck in reaching your goals.

Thank you sir. I appreciate your comments and positive thoughts.

hey there. I had been doing at least p90x workouts/week until Wednesday, as my friend who I was doing the workouts with had to help her brother move. I did the ab ripperX workout on Thursday, and yesterday did the plyometric workout. My plan for today was to do the yoga x workout, but I am feeling under the weather (flu?).

I definitely appreciate your comments and motivation and will still try to do the workout today. I placed an order for the bands and door attachment thing, which arrived yesterday. I have only been doing kenpo, plyometrics, yoga x and the ab ripper x workouts due to lack of equipment. I intend to do the entire workouts according to the p90x schedule beginning tomorrow.

I weighed myself yesterday and was back up to 174, however I went to a sushi place the day before- and did the all you can eat deal :). It was soooo worth it! Ok- back on track and no more bs.

I will post my daily workouts in this thread together with my weight to hopefully push me further.

you guys are the best!

Just did the p90x stretch video. I have always had a very tight left hamstring/ glut, and felt pretty tight doing the stretches- but in a good way.

there is some good stretching in this vides, but I wish Tony H would do 1 example of each stretch before he begins the countdown as it was sometimes difficult to watch and do the stretches at the same time.

Tomorrow I will do the chest and back video in addition to ab ripper x. It's going to be brutal, but in the best possible way.
