Kent BK4

I just purchased a Kent BK4 brush. When I check most of the images of this brush on the web, the brush is marked "Pure Badger" even though it is a silvertip. My brush is marked "Pure Silvertip Badger". Is this a newer version?

The BK 4/8/12 series by Kent is made of silvertip badger, though -for unknown reason- they had always marked them as "Pure badger", meaning that only badger hair had been used for the brush and leading to doubts like yours (and mine before I knew...). Possibly now they state "silvertip" to clarify things...

To add more confusion, BK2 is "pure" Pure badger...

Have a look at this from Shavewiki:

And, congratulations on that fine brush, Sir!!!:thumbup1:

Hmm. Maybe it is a newer model.
I know Kent has changed their logo over the years so it's not impossible for them to update the wording as well.

I have an older version BK8 and it is marked Pure.

there is no standard naming convention for the types of badger hair

On top of that brush makers that tie their own knots will sort the incoming hair into different grades and within each grade there is variation.

Badger hair is from a living animal (well dead when the hair comes off) and as such each animal is going to be different and hair from different parts of the animal are going to be different.

It's not like rows of corn in a field

Thanks everyone, but the badger hair on this brush is not the issue. It is clearly silvertip. The writing on the brush is the issue. All the pictures of Kent silvertip brushes I can find on the web are labelled "Pure Badger". This brush is labelled "Pure Silvertip Badger". I have not been able to find a picture of another brush labelled like this. I suspect it is a new change.

I e-mailed Kent and received a lightning fast reply from Vanessa Peters, what amazing customer service. It is a newer change in stamping.

Here is her reply:

Hi
The brush is filled with pure silver tip badger which is the best. But as
you say the brushes shown on site only say badger. We changed the stamping a
while ago but the photo were not changed on the site.

Vanessa

Kent uses some amazing quality hair. My BK2, which is supposedly "pure" is as soft as my Simpson Best knots. There is a little scritch if you look for it, but not nearly as irritating as the other pure knots I have tried, including Simpson. The only thing I don't like about Kent brushes is the loft is set too high for my preference, I wish they offered a model that would make face lathering more comfortable. I can use my BK2 for face lathering but it's bloom is so big it is gets lather everywhere (ears, nose, hair).

I've used the BK2 to face lather and liked it alot, though I did end up selling mine in favor of a stiffer knot. For a bowl latherer such as yourself I'd say this would be perfect, and it makes great lather in bowl and the brush when loaded does feel a bit more firm than when face lathering. I love the handle style, too. Overall it is a great 3-band brush! Good luck!

I have now used this brush several times and really like it. It is big enough for my face.

lol- this is even more confusing: the email described 3 different types of hair- pure, silvertip, and best. Makes me wonder if kent is really in the brush business

Well she meant that Pure Silvertip badger is the best grade available. Up until recently even though the brushes were silvertip, they were labelled "Pure Badger". It had been that way, maybe always. I think it was assumed that if you bought a Kent brush you were getting the best grade of badger available. In know that was the way I felt in the 60's when I bought my first Kent brush.
