Gents, I was lucky enough to score a puck of this soap off the bay. Used it for the first time this morning.
Granted, I've only used it once. But I have to say -- I think it's at least as good as Yardley. Maybe slightly better.
The soap comes in a hefty wooden bowl. The styling of the bowl is kind of sleek -- classic Scandinavian design. When I took the top off, at first I thought that the puck itself was dusty & needed a rinse. So I tipped it out of the bowl to clean it off. That's when I saw that what I thought was dust was in fact plastic. It was still shrink-wrapped!
The wrapping had adhered itself to the soap fairly well. Not surprising since I'm pretty sure it dates from the '70s. However, I was able to peel the plastic off in short order to reveal the pristine cake of soap underneath.
There's a large "Ø" scored in the center of the puck. The soap has that vintage, tallowy smell (those of you with vintage pucks of Yardley, Wrisley, etc. know what I'm talking about); I wasn't expecting any of the original scent to still be there. But while lathering up this morning, I gradually became aware of a woody, spicy, masculine blend which, although faint, was still present.
As mentioned above, the lather was first-rate. Easily made, dense, thick, rich & tallowy -- all the adjectives you most want to hear. The shave was smooth & effortless. An absolute pleasure.
Wow. Great lather AND great scent. I'm a happy guy.
The only problem is from what I can tell, this stuff is even scarcer than Yardley. So if you happen to find a puck on ebay or elsewhere, grab it. As fast as you can.
