What's new

just tried arko

And while it performs so well - the scent is R E A L L Y bad !!!!!
I can't get over it ! I think its also personal as it reminds me of some not so happy moments of my life :(
After using it only once sadly it will have to go to BST :(

This is possibly the first emotionally negative review I've read of Arko.

Man, it's one thing to dislike a scent, it's another to have one evoke unhappy memories.

I must lead a charmed life, the only scents that remind me of unhappy times are not likely to show up in a shaving product, unless Pinaud markets "Eau De Overflowing Port-a-potty In 120 Degree Heat".

Maybe if you look at it a new way...

Try the Eau De Overflowing Port-a-potty In 120 Degree Heat Veg

Some might posit that they already have.

I think L'Occitane already came up with that one.

Inspectoring,

I posted about the very same thing last week. My initial impression of Arko was that IT STINKS, literally.

Anyway, I chopped it up into my OS Mug and then shaved with it. I got a great lather and an equally great shave. Since then, my OS mug and Arko soap has been on the shelf in the bathroom and I can report that the smell has dissipated quite a bit. After a week or so it does still have a residual smell but the initial sharpness has gone now and it smells more soapy than before.

So I guess what I'm saying is persevere with it. Overall it's a decent soap once you get past the initial smell.

i find the smell fades quite a bit after lathering.
I got a puck of ogallala last week, melted it into a mug, but before I had the chance to use it for the first time I got hit with a real nasty stomach bug. Every time I went to pray to the porceline gods I could smell the soap in my bathroom. now the scent just makes me ill so I had to store it away, not sure what to do with it now.

so I can understand what you mean about bad scent memories.

Alright I think I'll suck it up and try this damn thing today. I opened the stick a couple of days ago to see if it would air out.

I may still cave at the last moment and reach for a Salter container...

Did get a nice shave out of it, but man is that smell hard to deal with. (and I'm even a fan of Tabac and vetiver)

To me it smells exactly like Barkeeper's Friend (the liquid).
Ben

Weird. Before I picked up the computer I was just reading a copy of a homebrew book called "How To Brew." The page I stopped on had a picture of cleaning products including Bar Keepers Friend. I had just looked at the picture and thought that I had never heard of that stuff, then I read this post.
