What's new

Just picked up a Slim

Got a slim for a good price on the bay, seller of course described the quality as much better than it turned out when in hand, but it was a good deal so no real complaints. I do have a question, however. The click between the 4 and 5, and the 5 and 6 are different than the other clicks, they feel different and sound different. 5 is right in the middle of the wheel and is the common denominator out of the 2 different sounding clicks, is this common or to be expected? If I had to describe the sound and feeling the different clicks make it would have to be a looser/less firm click than the others in both sound and feel. Comments and thoughts appreciated, thanks in advance...

I haven't noticed any difference between the positions on mine, and mine was pretty nasty when I rescued it from the local antique store....

Some good advice I've seen here is to put it in some boiling water for a bit, as that should loosen up any gunk that may be on the internals.

See if that helps.

Sounds to me like it could be dangerous and was probably covered by the recall Gillette sent out many years ago. I can't remember the exact address you were supposed to send it to so just send it to me and I'll take care of it.

I just checked my 64 slim and the settings of 4 and 5 seem a bit looser than the rest but it shaves fine on all settings. Unless it causes you problems I wouldn't worry about it.

checked mine and the sound and transition to 5 and to 6 are just as smooth as the rest.

One question though. Doesn't boiling the razor remove some of it's internal lubricant?

FWIW, I just got a Slim myself, no variation in clicking or feel across all settings on mine. It was in like new shape when I got it though so who knows.

I'm not too worried about it, click 5 to 6 seems to be the culprit the more I investigate

I never boiled it but it did come off the bay so who knows. Is there a lubricant I could try? WD40 lol?

So is mine...need to look hard to find even a scuff

Agreed. My J2 and J3 both have a different click when going to 5 from either direction but it doesn't affect the shave and doesn't seem to be a sign of anything being wrong with the razor.

Ok, good to know. It seems to shave fine and it seems like my neck likes a 3 and my face like a 9 (loaded with a feather, of course) so although I have to pass by it, I don't seem to have a need for #5

Even though there is a different click going to 5, there is no issue shaving on 5. It's just as stable a setting as any other.

A good thorough cleaning would be your best bet. Besides boiling, you could also soak in Simple Green, or put it in a pressure cooker to simulate the effect of an autoclave.

As for lubrication, don't use WD-40. Give it a good cleaning first, and if that doesn't solve the problem, a drop or two of mineral oil would be the next thing to try. Put a drop in at the top of the handle, between the butterfly doors, and also at the bottom. Work the adjustment and tightening knobs back and forth several times to spread the oil around.

SWMBO has some baby oil but it is scented. I will have to go to the walmart tomorrow and compare prices for the scentless baby oil and mineral oil. Would I find the mineral oil in hardware near the WD-40 or in automotive? Never had it on the grocery list come to think of it...

I use regular baby oil on mine because that's what I have. Wal Mart and Kroger pharmacies have good prices on bottles of mineral oil, if you want the unscented.

Mineral oil is usually in the Health Care section of a store, next to rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, and hydrogen peroxide.

I think your slim is suffering from the same *gunk* disease that the fatboy I got couple of weeks ago and the Black Adj I got yesterday. They were both initially stuck at 4, after some severe attention they are mostly OK, but like yours sound different after they pass 4.
I'ts just my wild theory but I expect who ever used them previously shaved on that setting, never cleaned it and it just got locked there and probably there is some *gunk* side effects remaining. Maybe the spring and other adjustable bits are worn or somebody has tried to force them after they got stuck and bent/damaged in some way hence they sound different now. The fatboy is a G2 and I have another G2 that is perfectly fine but has hardly any use, it must be related.
Anyway it's just my idea and they still work, just a bit worn.
