What's new

Just ordered a coticule!

I finally ordered a coticule after a) being fed up with my Arkansas stones for a while and b) having eyed the coticules for a while. It will be very interesting to see how well I manage to use them. Time to start reading through all the material on coticule.be again I guess :)

I've been reading a bit on that site, yes :)

I ordered mine from The Superior shave as they had a lot of information on their stones.

Is that site the best place to buy these?

coticule.be is an educational site. The Belgian coticules you see on that site are tested by Bart Torfs and then put up for reservation by members of the site. The coticules are sold by Ardennes Coticule. The benefit of reserving one of the coticules studied on that site is that you will have a better idea of how it will behave. If you are at all interested in Belgian coticules, then that forum is probably the best around. I'll reiterate, that forum is not a commercial forum.

I like them too. You'll be fine.Jarrod test a lot of his coticles also. You get the one in the picture with him unless it states otherwise. He's a great guy. I bought several from him.

It feels great to own something with as much history as these stones seem to have. If they also are capable of giving great edges, even better :w00t:

Superior Shave is a great site, and I know you will really like the stone. If it's not too late, try to get them to send you a small slurry stone along with your purchase. I know it's possible to use a coticule in lots of different ways, but probably the easiest way to start is with a whole pile of slurry on the honing surface, and the only way to get that is with a slurry stone or a diamond plate. Good luck, and post pictures!!

Slurry stone was ordered as well

I ordered my coticule from Jarrod at The Superior Shave. It is a select grade Les Lateneuses Belgian Coticule. Here are some pictures:

Of all the retailers in the US, I think The Superior Shave is the best for Belgian Coticules. They have quite a selection, and Jarrod appears to really know a lot about the hones. That said, there are other decent retailers as well. Ordering directly from Ardennes is a nice option too. That will allow you to specify a certain layer; however, the shipping costs and shipping time can be a downside.

Congrats! It is no secret that lately my love affair with these stones has blossomed, but it definitely wasn't always like this. If your experience will be anything like mine, learning how to use your Coticule properly will be a steep learning curve. A lot of people seem to have no troubles, though. Just remember that it is a skill and takes a lot of practice. It's somewhat similar to learning a musical instrument.

Also, be sure to post lot's of pictures!

@altshaver that Les Latneuses is incredible! Definitely a fun vein of rock for bevel setting.

i can vouch for Thesuperiorshave too. I got a very nice coticule from them a few weeks back. Top people to deal with. Make sure to post some pics when you receive it.

Cheers,

JF

If you lap that thin layer off the marbled side you'll get to the goody and thats a nice finish all to itself.don't try to lap it completely off though it will take you forever and wear o a DMT or two in the process. Just get enough area you can finish a blade on it comfortably.

WOW, great looking stone!! I was going to put in a plug for www.bestsharpeningstones.com too, because I've dealt with Michael Poe a few times now and found him to be extraordinarily helpful and his prices reasonable. Either way, you can't go wrong with a quality stone like this.

That is a pretty cool looking stone! :thumbup1:

I see that a lot of people list their coticule after which vein it was mined from. Is this interesting from more than a historical viewpoint? Do the different veins behave differently and is there a list somewhere where you can read about the different characteristics?
