What's new

Just christened my Charatan pipe

I've lurked the pipe threads here for a while now, secretly lusting over some of the fine pipes members have, and the joyous smoking experience they spoke of. As a cigarette smoker of 2 years, and the occasional consumer of cigars and snus, I had been looking for a way to make my tobacco consumption both more enjoyable and cheaper.
About 1.5 months ago as I scoured a flea market for shaving treasures, I came across a man with a few old pipes, one of which instantly appealed to me. So I grabbed that pipe, another for a newb pipe, and a razor, gave the man $6, and walked away exited to try my new aquisitions.
That night I cleaned all three very well, and set about identifying them. The pipe I had to have I soon found to be a Charatan's Make Cavalier style Special. I instantly became petrified to use it. I was afraid of scorching such a fine piece of briar, so I packed it away and started working on my technique with the "training wheels" pipe and a pouch of Prince Albert. From the first smoke I found it to be better than any cigarette I had smoked and on par with all but the best cigar I've enjoyed.
I left that pipe at work this weeked. Wanting a walk and a smoke on such a beautiful evening, I decided to try the Charatan. I packed the bowl from my current pouch of Borkum Riff Cherry Liqueur and headed out into the sunset.
From the moment I lit it I knew this was going to be a smoke like I had never experienced. In my other pipe I had found this tobacco rather harsh on the tongue, with little or no cherry flavor coming through. The Charatan was sooooo much smoother, with just the right note of cherry. I still can't say I like this tobacco very much. But it is quite acceptable in this pipe. The smoke stayed cool and dry for the entire bowl, becoming just slightly ashy flavored at the bottom (probably from the lack of any cake there).
I now understand some of the "pipe snobbery" I've seen here. I really can't wait to try a good tobacco in it. I think I will be joining the Brotherhood of the Briar group here. And probably developing two more ADs I don't need. :001_tt2:

Haven't smoked in a while, but the variety and quality of pipe tobacco is nothing short of mindblowing. Check

It's a great place to find reviews on famous blends.

Enjoy your Charatan. One of my first pipes was a Charatan Dublin with a saddle bit. It sings with English tobacco's.

I may try it tonight with a little Panzance...

I am a big pipe fan. I have 11 pipes. I have a Soren and a Jirsa, Cusano. But most of mine are hand made. I also have 14 or so pounds or fine pipe tobacco. Mostly ropes and flakes. If you want some thing real good get a tin of Peterson's Irish flake and make sure to sit down, becuase if you are not it will sit you down. It is also one of the finest tobaccos out there. Or a milder one is Samuel Gawith Full Virgina flake, it has a very mild tobacco taste. Or there is Charles Rattray's Hal 'O the Wyndes, it is a divine Virginia/perique. Happy smoking

I loooooove my pipes. I have a fully stocked cigar humidor full of untouched, premium cigars and it has been that way since I discovered the world of pipes (of course, I still keep them perfectly humidified).

Coming from cigars, I skipped the aromatics and dived straight into English/Non-Aromatic blends. I love Squadron Leader and Davidoff Royalty.

Most of the aromatics I have tried just didn't sit well with me.

Wow I don't know how I missed this thread but that is one heck of a flea market score:thumbup1:. Yeah coming from cigarettes you might like some thing a bit stronger. If you like berry aromatics you've got to try Firedance Flake by Samuel Gawith. But be warned they all will strongly flavor a bowl I might hesitate to use in a Charatan unless I was sure that's what I liked. But that being said, smoke what you like & like what you smoke. I tend to favor natural tobaccos except for some of the traditional Lakeland aroes; 1792, G&H dark scented flake, G&H rum flake, etc. But in the interest of full disclosure I have a large GBD devoted to Firedance as, in my experience, it is the only fruity aromatic that lives up to what others promise.

PS. All are certainly welcome to peruse and join the Brotherhood of the Briar, we'd love to have you.

Seriously, a Charatan and extras for six bucks? I'll tell you what, I'll give you double your money, throw in a Dr. Grabow and a pound of Lane 1Q.:thumbup1: Just kidding, fantastic find, join the Brotherhood of Briar, any one with that kind of luck is surely welcome!

Thanks for all the tips. Right now I'm stuck buying small amounts of whatever the local store stocks, but I'm keeping a wish list for when I can go shopping for good tobaccos.
I'm thinking from the few I've tried I definitely like natural tobaccos more. I want something a little sweet though, so I'm going to aim for something with some black cavendish next. Gonna stick to the el cheapo pipe and get the Charatan cleaned up, maybe pick up a few more. Think I've seen a kaywoodie in a box somewhere...

The charatan wasn't even the best of the deal. The razor I picked up was a Senator . My lucky day for sure.
I'm in for the Brotherhood for sure. Thanks for having me.
