What's new

Just bought this soap killer...

Looking forward to seeing how quickly this Chubby 2 in Best kills my soaps..

Awesome!

I've never tried a Simpson, but I bet you will love it. After using a little Rooney as my only brush for many years I got his big brother a week ago. He's still breaking in.

I was originally worried he would be too stupidly large, but I have to say I love him. Eats through soap like it's candy floss and feels like a wet dog giving you the biggest, sloppiest kiss ever ... but, you know, in a good way.

Congrats man! Now if only you had some soap to use it with.

Nice Rooney! really like the color of the handle!

Yeah, I specifically bought this with my soap den in mind...time to start knocking them down...

That is a soap eater for sure. I have all three Chubbies and that dense knot is a soap hog for sure. Congratulations, I think you will really like the brush.

How's the carcass funk on the Chubby?

I'm still giving mine extra shampoos...

It's actually not bad at all. Think it was sitting for awhile as the hairs had a fine dust on them when I first took the brush out of the box. Immediately soaked it for 20 mins whine I got home, lathered in MWF and let it sit on the top of the bristles only for about 30 mins (did this twice with a rinse in between). No funk. Think the lanolin helps.

First shave is today...will post a lather pic if possible.

Congrats! Nice brush. I would really like to have that brush in the 2-band super!

Thought about that but I read some reviews that suggested the super was very close to the Best.

Going to write a review after a week of shaves...

I'm going to have to break out the woolfat for shampoo-rinse-repeat. I usually only use it in the 'cold' season (which lasts for about 23 days here). Looking forwards to a review, I realized after I got this that I hadn't even thought about other brands and now am thinking I ought to have broadened my horizons a bit.

Shavefan, good eye. It's a Woo WA2 which I keep in my bathroom. Okay, that's not true - it sits beside the single window that allows me enough light to take a photo with my phone. Awesome amp.

Can you be surrounded by a pair?

Edit:
Actually I've been using a 1/1 for about 6 years (great brush). I've started putting a few things away for my boy (who won't be shaving for another 12 years likely). Given what happened to the British soap houses I thought... maybe I should get him a Rooney too and stick it in a box. Then, when I was looking at the options it suddenly hit me - clear as day - of course he would want a brush handed down from me, not some new still-wrapped, soulless thing. So being a good dad, I decided that as much as it pains me, I would have to settle for this one for myself, so that 1/1 would be there for him when he needs it. The sacrifices parents make... :innocent:

So I'm thinking a nice Rooney, a new puck of BB tallow, and a Gillette New LC will make a good starter kit for when the time comes. You guys putting anything aside for your wee lads?

I plan on introducing my son and he's already asked questions about it, but nothing as of yet. Giving your boy a puck of Pens and a Rooney to start eh? Is his first car going to be a Rolls or Bentley? LOL

If he can afford it.:001_tt2: My first car cost $75, and if buys himself a Bentley for his first I'm going to look pretty stupid.

I cringe when I see new people starting to learn wet shaving and everyone recommends they use Williams or the equivalent in product and equipment. Learners are the ones who need the best lather and for the the amount of money a good quality soap costs and the length of time it will last you, it's really a no-brainer. So an $80 brush that could last him his lifetime and $30 worth of fantastic soap that will lasts him a year or two seems the way to go.

I started with straights and all except one I bought old W&Bs and the like and sanded the crap out of them and honed them. But after few years, the fad got so intense you couldn't get anything decent for less than hundreds of dollars - and I'm talking about razors that need a lot of care and attention to even be useable. I just don't want the nice old, quality stuff completely gone by the time he is old enough to appreciate it. I have one of these set aside for him too in case he wants to learn.

But maybe you're right - on second thought I'd better keep that BB until he's proven himself responsible enough to handle it. I'll trade it to him for his Bentley. :w00t:

Scuba- That's a nice looking brush, although chubbies look a tad silly until they bloom. I'll probably get one eventually. It is the one simpson that appeals to me.

Pudu- I have a Truefitt and Hill which I believe is a rebranded Rooney 1/2 and it is my favorite brush. Just a perfect combination of softness and backbone. That is a cool looking amp. I looked up the specs and it is full of tubes I don't know, but I guess all my tube experience is with guitar stuff, and there are only about 6 tube types that get used anymore for that. I don't think I have any headphones that are worthy of that beast.

Thanks Basso (tubes are another thing that have sky rocketed, sigh). How do you like the size of the 1/2. I spent a long time trying to decide between 1/1 & 1/2 when I originally bought mine.

By the way I was kidding about the brush, I just wanted a bigger brush for myself. But I fully plan on getting a small Rooney to keep aside for my boy. For the money, they are just too good to let disappear.

Pudu...I hear you...was just busting your nuggets.

I started with Proraso and will probably suggest my son does the same if they don't reformulated it into the equivalent of shave guano.

Nice W&B BTW...you still str8 shaving? I really miss it. Was doing it everyday til the kids were born and then time got the better of me.

I havent' bought tubes in a long time, and don't play out any more, so they don't decay too fast. I think the last time I did my 2 amps, it was about 200 bucks for the pair (Mostly 12ax7, 6l6 and El84, all current production IIRC).

I find the 1/2 about perfect, but would like to try a 1/3. I tend to favor slightly bigger brushes (got rid of a Simpson commodore almost immediately because it was too small). I haven't had much luck finding a 1/3 though. It seems nobody stocks the bigger ones regularly
