What's new

Just bought a Thiers-Issard brush - anyone with knowledge of this brand ?

I know they make great straight razors, but now they also make brushes - and I bought a 23 mm size 3-Band Super Badger in natural horn.
Anyone with experience with this brand, when it comes to their brushes ?

It sure looks beautiful, natural horn, handcrafted, 3-Band Super Badger, loft circa 50 mm, knot 23 mm, total length 105 mm:
The one I bought is the beige-brown one to the left in the photo......

Hope it performs well :biggrin1:

I'm closing in on my goal to have a brush collection of 16 brushes, and then stop there and continue my brush collection journey into the 20's in 2013........:001_tt2:

Rumors suggest this is made by Lee, who makes Rooney & M&F brushes.
If so, I wonder what hair it is - since they call it Super Badger 3-Band hair.......

The handle is genuine horn, not faux horn, but I also understand that some of the older Rooneys were made with genuine horn handles, so it all adds up to be an old reissued Rooney brush.......not bad at all, since Rooney brushes are impossible to get in Europe, even though Lee makes them in his little shop in the UK.........no shop I have heard of sell them in the entire Europe, which is weird.

That would be interesting if it was Lee who was making them, they say France on the bottom but are made in England...
They look very nice though and your brush collection has a ton of variety, well done!
Do you have any pictures of all your brushes together, I know you are waiting on the Rooney and M&F?

Thanks, I try to get variety in my brush collection - I almost just bought 3 Chubby 2 in 2-Band since I couldn't imagine any brush being better than that, but instead I have taken some chances and bought limited edition and harder to get more rare brushes - variety is the spice of life, some wise man once said, I believe - and I tend to agree :001_smile
Regarding a collection photo - not yet, I only have 6 brushes at home now, the rest is on pending order around the world.......will do a collection photo in late September/earlyOctober, once they all are together at home

Sounds good, I can imagine the excitement you are experiencing awaiting all these great brushes! I hope the vast majority of the incoming brushes will find a permanent home with you; I have been through plenty of brushes myself and have become pretty happy with my current collection. I seem to have (unplanned) ended up with mostly pairs (a bigger and a smaller): 2 M&F, 2 Shavemac, 2 Simpson, 2 Rooney, 2 Bob Farvour, 2 Restores, 1 Rudy Vey, 1 Body Shop (near and dear to me as it was a gift from my wife), 1 SOC boar (not the biggest fan of boars, this will probably go to my brother). I need to take a current picture of my brushes as well.

The handle shape and overall design is very nice and traditional. TI is obviously known for its superb straights, but these brushes have their own charm. Congrats on this new one, Claus.

Thanks for providing me with this very usefull Google Link :thumbdown

I'm not exactly stupid - and I did google 'Thiers Issard brushes' and searched on B&B before I made this post here in the brush section on B&B.

To be quite honest - I only found 1 owner, who actually owns the brush I bought - and then I found 2 owners, who had the larger version of mine, which I would think would be a little bit better suited for bowl lathering. Neither really provided me with usefull information about who really makes the brush handle, the hair knot and stuff like that.

I also looked in vain for information about whether this brush is better suited for bowl lathering or face lathering, or how much the knot in the 23 mm version 3-band Super Badger blooms when wet.

All these questions stayed unanswered in the first 10 hits in the google search you provided for me - which is the reason I posted this on B&B, expecting to get a little bit wiser - and to be honest I also post here because most of us are brush fanatics.

If you post these ingenious google links in a reaply to each thread, where a guy asks for advice on a certain brush, I think you would ruin most of the enjoyable and cosy atmosphere & debate in the B&B brush sub forum to be quite honest.

I make a post about a pretty rare brush, that very few has posted about - yet your contribution to my thread is a pretty useless google link, that you obviously have not even checked up on yourself.

This is just not good enough, Sir - I give you the tumbs down for this useless reply :thumbdown

Great looking brush... Congrats!!

That is a beautiful brush Claus, I would have chosen the same handle that you chose.

Doug

Thank you gentlemen

I opted for the 23 mm Super Badger 3-band version, because I did Google search it, and found that the larger 26 mm Silvertip 3-Band (not Super Badger, but Silvertip do they call the hairs in the 26 mm) was too floppy and bloomed too much. I hope and expect the 23 mm version with its shorter loft and slightly stiffer -Band Super Badger hair to be less floppy and less soft, with a bit more backbone and less bloom, which will suit me better, I hope (I face lather exclusively now)

Will report back to this thread, once I get it tested properly :001_cool:

I had one of these brushes years ago – exact same size but I chose the black horn. They are nice brushes but it was too floppy for me and I sold it off. I prefer a shorter loft with soft bristles and the bristles on the TI brush were too long for my tastes (too long because they made the brush floppy) and it didn’t seem to be particularly dense for it’s size. The bristles were soft but I find the Vulfix bristles to be softer and more to my liking so I use my T&H turnback as my daily brush.

The TI’s are gorgeous brushes and some people may prefer them. I just wish they had softer bristles and a shorter loft and I’d have kept it.

Hope that helps.

I don't own one, but this thread makes me want to. I look forward to your assessment.

So the one you owned was the 23 mm and not the 26 mm knot size ?

I had hoped that the 23 mm with its realtively short loft of 50-52 mm would be somewhat stiff with backbone. I read that owners of the 26 mm version with 58-60 mm loft felt it was too floppy, but had really high hopes for the shorter 23mm version :001_unsur

Yes, I had the 23 mm version in Black Horn and I did partially choose that shorter version for the same reason you did - with hope that the shorter loft might mitigate any floppiness issues. But as it turned out it really was too floppy for my tastes, however, ymmv. Gorgeous brush but just not my preference.

Sorry I couldn't deliver a better evaluation but that's how I felt about mine. That was quite some time ago though, when they first came out, perhaps things have gotten better? Hopefully.

Best of luck with yours.

Chris

I have two (2) of Thiers-Issard Horn brushes

Both 26mm Knots in SilverTip "not at all floppy" . One is in Black Horn & the other is in Desert Ironwood.

Beautiful quality fit & finish.

Thanks, Sir.

Hope it will perform well. It did cost me £125 including shipment, but only with a 10% discount - so it's not really really pricey, but still on the more expensive side of brushes - so if it indeed turns out to be floppy mop monster, I will be a bit sad to be honest :crying:

Your comment,Sir,makes me smile and hope that my 23 mm Super Badger will not be floppy at all.

The 26 mm edition supposedly is made from even softer Silvertip 3-Band hairs, while the 23 mm I bought is made from Super Badger 3-Band hair, so it should be less soft - because of the lower loft and slightly less soft hairs.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Don't expect to eb able to sell this brush used for even 1/4 of the price, so basically I'm stuck with it, whether it's good or bad :biggrin1:
