Just bought a Merkur Progress long handle

Hi guys, I have been wet shaving for the last month using the merkur 34 hd and I love it, now that I have learned how to use it properly. Today I decided to upgrade to a Merkur Progress long handle. By buying it I will be able to control the aggressiveness of the razor and also try a long handle.

I tried to find the Megress, which is the modified Progress, but the only retailer that sells it, Lee's Razors is out of stock. No one knows when they will become available again, so I decided to go ahead and buy the progress.

Do you guys think I made a good choice?

Thanks

Out of the 50+ razors I have used, the Progress LH is my absolute favourite razor of all time! I have had it for nearly 2 years and have had zero desire to change razors.

I love the retro plastic knob and wouldn't change to a metal one. The shaves are great and the razor is not very picky with blades.

So, to answer your question: you made a great decision to go for the Progress :thumbup1:

And if you like it and want to have it converted to a Mergress, you can deal directly with Mer without having to wait for Lee's to get them in stock.

I think it was a great choice! I just had a wonderful 2 pass BBS with my 510 (LH Progress) this morning, and it is getting increasingly tough to pick up another razor. Like Nav said above, I too like the retro plastic knob, and wont change to a metal one.

Progress LH was the 1st razor I bought after much research (mainly lurking on B&B). Great razor IMO. I will probably get it changed to a Mergress at some point as I'm not too keen on the plastic handle.

If you're like most of us, you'll accumulate a few more razors. If you're like me, you'll accumulate many many razors. One thing I can guarantee is this: you'll have a very hard time finding a better shaving razor than the Progress. I own a Mergress, and I love it.

I own a fair sized stable of the "classic" razors, fatboys, slant, Merkur HD, Superspeeds and so on. I have some rare ones Davies Rythmic, Darwin, white handled NOS slant, gold Bostonian and lots more. The Progress is outstanding even in that crowd.

those were my first two DEs except i have the short handle model. the Progress is a nice razor and very popular here. you will soon see that those two razors have a different feel in your hand and on your face and you will be on your way to discovering what you prefer in a shaving tool.

I had a short handled Progress converted to a long handled Mergress (way back in the old days before there was a long handled progress) Pretty cool little collectors item now :001_smile

I bought the Merkur Progress Long Handle more than a year ago and honestly i don't use it much. What i don't like about it is that the setting is not standard, i.e. when i set it to 3 today and use it then i replace the razor and set it back on 3 aginan, i don't get the same razor depth.

Instead i have been using the Merkur 37C Slant Bar. i like it a lot but sometimes my beard is not that long and want something smoother, so i end up using my original Merkur 34C. Switching back and forth is a headache so i want to go back to the progress but this time i want to have it adjusted by MER and make it a Megress.

Do you guys think that a Megress is a much more consistent Razor? shall i go for the investment?

Thanks,

Thanks for the follow-up.

I find that all of the Progress razors I have owned did not have any inconsistency between using them and I remove the blade after every shave so the razor comes apart then back together the next day. I've had 6 or more of them so far, short and long handled ones as well as custom ones

Are you aligning the cap and base with the triangle and line?

There are 2 ways to put the cap on (reversed and correct)

Make sure you line up the line over the triangle each time you put it together and you should not have any issues

Yup, as turtle said, you shouldn't have any issues if you put it together properly. The Progress is pretty much the only SB razor I still use regularly, I prefer OCs. It's a great razor, very smooth and efficient.
