Jobert Chimney: Olivewood

So Joshua sent me this guy, Thanks man, I was having the worst couple of weeks when this all went down too, totally made more then my day with it....

Although i have been sitting on it (not literally Mr Mallen), I finally got around to having a smoke with it tonight, not only its maiden voyage at least for me, but my first smoke in more then a month i think, first thing i noticed with the shape i had to get a bit used to holding in my hand with the stack pointed outward, but after a few puffs this went away and it felt natural, also the olivewood is more then a bit heavier then my Briars,... this guy wont be for hanging out of the mouth,... but is great for sitting out front with a cup of Joe in my Fav B&B mug

And wow does this thing have some capacity, i only wanted to put about a 1/4 bowl in it, but i think even that took about as much as 3/4 of my lil lorenzetti pipe does

I was so excited I knew there was only one Baccy i could go with and i crammed er' with 3 oak Syrian latakia, It lit up okay, and i smoked all the way down to ash without relighting just some basic stuff, ashing a bit a little repack once or twice (it was twice), I had some gurggle along the way but nothing major, and my smoke tasted and smelled as it should and i remembered, which is almost a bitter chocolate in a mild way along with some stuff thats exotic to me,

I was a successful first pipe out,... and i look forward to breaking this guy in to get to its full potential

Thanks so much Joshua,... yer one heck of a feller for sure

and sorry i took so long to get to this guy, hope it was worth the wait !

been missing too many threads on B&B! just saw this due to blew's comment..

btw, nice pic James!! dang you are sure making that pipe look good!

and you are most welcome! (just think, somewhere in Canada post's vast network of warehouses is the original package with a few more Joberts with your name on em!! lol I wonder if they will EVER arrive?)

FYI Jobert (aka Johan Slabbert) is/was a really nice guy from South Africa who sent me a bunch of those 10 years ago in exchange for some briar (and to help get his pipes into some American, ahem, or Canadian in this case, collector's hands lol). As discussed, I've given away all but a few many moons ago... and sadly, I lost touch with him in the years since.... but hoping he's still making pipes. He tends to larger designs, and with the weight of the wood itself, they are definitely meant to sit down, relax and enjoy! Definetly NOT teeth clenchers LOL

... but they do offer a cool smoke... the size is PERFECT for latakia blends! I am so glad you had a great smoke!! I find it's nice to switch up from briar occasionally too!

and give it time, wait til you see the patina the bowl gets... it will darken and the grain will be even more beautiful!

smoke in good health my friend!!

Yeah man I can practice trying to talk and smoke without having my pipe go out 100 times on me lol good way to sample goods... we actually have a few local guys around here

you should start a pipe/cigar club! that's what I did in 2000 after moving back to PA from Los Angeles. we met every tuesday, sampled each others tobaccos, broguht some decent spirits, had special guests (erik Nording, Mark Tinsky etc), did monthly dinners and even a few annual fund raisers.... I'm not active anymore but still friends with a number of the gentlemen! Miss those days! going to need to stop in one fo these tuesdays and reconnect ;)
