What's new

Jinhao X750

I bought two of these pens ($14 shipped for both!) with Broad nibs to try my hand at grinding stub nibs. I thought I'd give one a try, though, before I potentially ruin them. These are cheaper than buying Lamy replacement nibs, but hopefully I'll get a good stub out of one or both. I forgot to mention below that this pen's nib isn't really flexible, per se, but with a little pressure, line variation is possible.

Thanks Dave. I'll post some writing samples after I finish the nibs. I'm not sure why, but my photos make the plating on the clip look really rough. That may just be fingerprints or the poor lighting. In person, all the plating is smooth and looks good.

I'm actually a little apprehensive about grinding the nib on this pen because it writes so nicely as is. I don't really care for broad pens (unless they're stubbed), so it's fate is sealed.

Stub attempt.

All that "skipping" in the squiggles at the bottom of the last photo isn't the pen's fault. I was writing very lightly.

A little more grinding. I'm done until some finer grit shows up.

Nice going on the grind attempt! Like you said, it still writes, even if you don't have as much variation as you want yet. The first (and only) nib I tried to grind to a stub was from my Edison Hudson. Lets just say the nib ended up in the garbage. But that was last year, maybe time to try again.

Ouch! Those are good nibs. Give a Jinhao a go. $7 shipped from China. I'm ordering some micromesh and lapping film to polish the nib. My only complaint about the X750 is there is a lot of material on the top side of the nib and not much on the bottom. That's the case on the two examples I have, so it's not possible to take too much material off the bottom of the nib when flattening it. That results in less line variation. Also, these Broad nibs aren't much broader than most western nibs. They're fun to play with, anyway.

Nice work Andy! I don't know if this is saying much, but I would write with it and sure enjoy it!

Thank you for the kind words, Ed. It needs some polishing, but so far, it's pretty good. This won't be my last stub grind. That's for sure.
