What's new

It's a sickness. I can't pass an antique store anymore.

I stopped in an antique shop looking for an old razor or two (what is it about these things? They're like potato chips -- you can't stop at one...) and :001_tt1: Found these:

I left some other items, including another GEM, and a curious round razor that looks like it was designed for shaving armpits. (That one was mint, though, in the box. If anyone wants it, I'll go back for it.)

If it helps for pricing purposes, what I paid for these was:

Gold Ever-Ready, filigreed handle, in silver velvet-lined box, quite good condition (somewhere between 3 and 4), with the gold blade box, three original Ever-Ready brand blades plus one Gem-brand blade. $12

Chrome GEM Micromatic, in box, mint. Still has original blades, wrapped, box intact. Even has the little wax paper shipping insert. Not sure of year, but it has the NRA (National Recovery Administration) eagle on the box. $3

Gillette Fatboy. Date code F4. It was soap-scummy, but with soap and water and a toothbrush it cleaned up pretty good. $1

Wade and Butcher Sheffield straight razor. I don't know what possessed me to get this one. It looks worn, but was pretty damned sharp nonetheless, no nicks in the blade. $5

Ever-Ready brush, model 150C. I think the handle is bakelite, which would make it what, from the 1930s? I'm guessing from the stiffness that the bristles are boar. Clean. $5.

I can't tell whether it was a good haul or not. But once he said $1 for the Fatboy, I was in a buying mood.

Congrats on a very nice score. Looks like you got some very sweet deals there.
That Fatboy looks nice, so does the GEM.

Yes, it is an AD all to itself. I acquire business cards from antique stores and malls. I can't pass one without stopping for a quick look.

The nice thing about shaving stuff is you can still find plenty of it which keeps things interesting. I have some other collections, but rarely if ever find anything worthwhile for those.

Congrats on a great score!

And those are some excellent prices ... each item is about 50~80% less than the average prices around here in South Jersey. Even so, most of the antique stores have already been picked clean, and finding something worth buying at ANY price is rare.

Nice score! I've never seen a fatboy in antique store. The closest I've seen are two flare tip superspeeds for $6 each.

Glad 4 u as am 4 all who make canny deals; keep up the good work. Quoting the King of OKC Pawnbrokers, Max Makler "and how little do you want/will you take for this?"

That Brush is awesome! I love the handle.....Maybe it will show up on BST and I will get a chance at it!

I know what you mean with regards to not passing an antique shop without going in. I am off to the UK and Germany on business in the fall and am itching to go a hunting to see what I can find. :)
