Does anyone have experience with Italian razors? I couldn’t find anything other than mentions here, but I’m looking at a Fontani Baciamisubito 7/8. It’s a beautiful piece, but I’m wondering how the steel and build quality are.
Thanks for the info. I’ve also been eyeing Rasoir Sabre, and I’m leaning towards them because they’re a bit more affordable and they have 6/8 blades. Fontani seems to only have 7/8 models, save for one 5/8 whose design I don’t really care for.Just looking at the shape of blank, I was wondering if it was a Chinese blank. From the web, it is Böhler K720 steel, so the blank is probably forged in either Germany or Italy. I'm guessing that the Chinese blanks I'm thinking of are based on European models.
There is a lot of discussion of K720 online. According to Knife Engineering by Larrin Thomas, it is Böhler's O2 steel. I believe Boker uses O2 for some of their high end razors. Also called 90MnCrV8 if you are a real steel nerd. So the steel should be good.
The maker is said to be from a long-standing family of cutlers, so he most likely has high standards and good tooling. So the temper and the grind should be fine.
I am a huge fan of Rasoir Sabre France, another one man operation producing traditionally styled SRs (with a twist). So I say go for it! You will have an SR sourced outside of the ordinary brands we all know. The prices I saw looked perfectly fair. And you will be encouraging a cutler working in the classic European tradition and style.
I haven't checked again, but the RSF basic 6/8 (Lalune branded?) is one heck of a deal. Thanks for the info. I just started straight razor shaving this week with a Gold Dollar. I’m worried that a 7/8 would be too much blade to handle.
