What's new

Isn't it time for a straight?

I've been DE shaving since December. I started with an EJDE89L and mastered that. Less than a month ago I bought a Muhle R41 (2011) and mastered that, which means I get BSS with no burn, nicks, cuts or weepers. It's effortless and I'm thrilled with the shaves. But now, as a red blooded man that always seeks adventure, isn't it time for the holiest of holies in the shaving world, a straight razor?

I think you've answered your own question.

Like you, I'm fairly new to this. Like you, I've discovered I like aggressive razors as my technique has improved. Like you, I hear the sirens of the straight calling to me. Since the heart of who we are is the heart, one has to listen to those calls. Otherwise life is like a tomb. I've been sitting on the edge of getting my first straight because I'm still enjoying my Fat Boy and Futur and really want to try a Sledge Hammer Slant. But I've no doubt that, if I don't destroy myself with one of those or some other toy, I'll be purchasing my first straight soon.

I started DE shaving a bit before you and just switched over a week or two ago. As others are suggesting, I started with Whippeddog and got a great first straight. Good luck!

I started shaving with straight razors back in about 84. I recently lost the vision in my left eye which resulted in my not being able to see certain areas. I have to shave these by feel. Fearing I might wind up like Van Gogh someday, I pulled out my old Hoffritz slant which I learned to shave with back in the 60s and now use that except for trimming my moustache which I keep very thin (1930s style) with my philtral dimple in the center shaved. That cannot be accomplished with a DE and requires the straight razor and a scissors.
I do believe I get as close a shave with the Hoffritz as I did with my straights, it takes less time, and my left ear is still firmly affixed to the side of my head.
